European Tour Pro and Aberdeen Standard Investments ambassador Marc Warren on how he will tackle Gullane’s 17th hole during the Scottish Open
In preparation for the Scottish Open at Gullane, Aberdeen Standard Investments ambassadors Marc Warren and Gary Nicol discuss the par-3 17th hole and how to approach it.
‘What shot do you see when stood on the tee?’
Predominantly from the tee I see a draw, most of the time the wind is off the right. There’s a slight banking on the green just off the right hand side that takes the ball off to the left.
You can use the slope on the left hand side to let the ball roll out closer to the hole.
It’s quite a long par 3 and can play anything from an 8-iron to a 5- or 6-iron.
‘A lot of people see the shot through the air when in fact the ground is your friend when playing links golf’
The number, even though it might say 180 to the hole you are actually playing to land your ball at 150-160 and obviously the contours will have a massive influence on what the ball is doing.
