The first round of the Players Championship is one of the most highly-anticipated non-major days of the golfing calendar.

Now that LIV Golf has attracted some of the best PGA Tour stars like Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau, the Players Championship can’t really boast the best field in the game, but it isn’t far off.

The first two rounds can be somewhat of a slog at every PGA Tour event. More than 100 players jostling for position on the leaderboard is tough going, especially at a golf course like the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass.

But even with perfect daylight in 2024, all players failed to get around before daylight halted play in each of the first two rounds of the Players Championship. Some players had to return in the dark the next morning before they could start their next round.

Last season, the first slot was at 7.40 am local time (11.40 am in the UK) in Ponte Vedra from the first hole and the 10th hole. A two-tee system helps to get more players on the golf course at once. Ryan Moore, Chesson Hadley and Zac Blair were first to go on hole 1, while Troy Merritt, Taylor Pendrith and Taylor Montgomery went on hole 10.

The same system was adopted in 2025, and Chad Ramey, C.T. Pan, and Vince Whaley will get play underway on the first hole in round one. Lanto Griffin, Andrew Novak, and David Lipsky will start on hole 10.

This was the same in round two, of course. What is also a regular feature of the first two rounds is a cluster of featured groups which extra coverage options on the broadcaster offer fans to watch exclusively.

What do you make of the Players Championship first round tee times? Should they be made earlier to avoid players not finishing their rounds? Should there be fewer players on the course in general? Does a two-tee start help? Tell us on X!

It was announced before the 2025 Players Championship started that Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele would play together in the first two rounds, the ultra-marquee group made up of the top three players in the world.

Ludvig Aberg, Justin Thomas and Hideki Matsuyama is the second marquee group drawn to play together.
