R&A and Sky Sports extend deal to show The Open and AIG Women’s Open

Sky Sports is set to show The Open and the AIG Women’s Open for the next five years, as well as the R&A’s biggest amateur tournaments…

The R&A has extended its partnership with Sky Sports through 2028.

The agreement will see Sky Sports continue its coverage of The Open Championship and the AIG Women’s Open, maintaining a relationship which began in 2016.

The Amateur Championship, the Women’s Amateur Championship, the Walker Cup and the Curtis Cup are also part of the deal, contributing to the channel’s all-angles coverage of golf in the professional and amateur spheres.

“Our partnership with Sky Sports has enabled us to deliver outstanding live coverage of our championships to fans, as well as providing important revenues which support our broader activities to develop golf around the world and sustain the sport for current and future generations,” R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers said.

“The live broadcast continues to push boundaries and use technology to give viewers a deeper understanding and appreciation of the skill required by the world’s best players and presents the drama and excitement of our championships in a dynamic and entertaining way.

“We look forward to continuing our work with Sky Sports over the next five years.”

Proceeds from this agreement will help the R&A to follow its commitment to invest £200 million in golf over 10 years and support golf’s development internationally through participation initiatives, governance activities, advocacy for sustainability and staging of inspirational golf championships.

The Open Championship will return to Royal Troon this summer where Henrik Stenson hoisted the Claret Jug in 2016, while the Old Course at St Andrews will host the AIG Women’s Open.

“We are delighted to be able to extend our relationship with The R&A, as Sky Sports continues to be the home for the biggest golf tournaments in the world, including all the majors this year,” Sky Sports managing director Jonathan Licht said.

“The Open and the AIG Women’s Open are two iconic championships and centre-pieces of any sporting summer for fans. We look forward to continuing to offer our award-winning coverage across our Sky Sports platforms.”
