The second round of any major is crucial at both ends of the leaderboard

The second round of the PGA Championship is vital as it concerns players wanting a late tee time as one of the leaders on the next day, and players who just want any tee time the next day.

If you can manage a low score at Quail Hollow on day two, you should be able to put yourself in contention for the second major championship of the year. In 2024, Xander Schauffele shot a 68 in round two at Valhalla to play in the final group from hole 1 with Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala.

Schauffele went on to win the event by one shot from Bryson DeChambeau in Kentucky. DeChambeau made a significant move in round two 12 months ago, shooting a 65. He might not have won, but a month later, he beat Rory McIlroy to the US Open title at Pinehurst.

At the other end of the leaderboard, the cut was made at level-par. So any player that wasn’t in the red after 36 holes didn’t play at the weekend and never had a shot at major glory. This group of players included Ludvig Aberg, Jon Rahm, Matt Fitzpatrick, Akshay Bhatia, Sam Burns, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, who shot rounds of 72 and 77.

In the second round in 2025, Rory McIlroy has been drawn to play with Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele at 1.47 pm local time, which is 6.47 pm UK time.

2023 PGA Champion Brooks Koepka was drawn to play with former Open champion Shane Lowry and fan favourite Rickie Fowler. Grand slam chaser Jordan Spieth has been drawn with Ludvig Aberg and Patrick Reed.

The PGA Championship cut rules say that the top 65 and ties make the weekend at this tournament. These numbers above 65 will include the players that were tied.
