Step aside Michael Jordan! The US Olympic Golf squad is the real Dream Team

The Dream Team tag was born with the US Olympic basketball side in 1992. But the US golf team heading to Paris in 2024 is equally as formidable…

The phrase ‘Dream Team’ rings a bell for many sports fans, largely because of the Olympic Games, which descended upon Paris this year.

In 1992, the US men’s basketball team swept away the competition to win the gold medal with a 12-strong roster of household names and global basketball icons.

Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and Magic Johnson were just three figures involved in the romp of Barcelona which saw this side average winning by 44 points in each game, culminating in beating Croatia in the final.

But 32 years later, has golf found its answer to the Dream Team? Is the US golf team of the 2024 Olympic Games the Dream Team? There is no doubt the United States is the strong favourite to deliver the gold medallist at Le Golf National in both the men’s and women’s competitions, with seven stars of the game representing the stars and stripes.

Who is representing the US in golf at the Olympics?

There are no prizes for guessing who was first on the US roster. Scottie Scheffler is the Masters champion and has been the dominant force on the PGA Tour for most of the season.

Approaching the 100-week mark at the top of the world rankings, Scheffler has won six times this year including the Players Championship, the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Memorial Tournament.

The four-man American squad also contains the reigning gold medallist from Japan three years ago. Xander Schauffele became the Champion Golfer of the Year at Royal Troon in July, capping off a fine season that has seen him win two major titles.

The 30-year-old won the PGA Championship in May and arguably trumped the record of his teammate Scheffler in 2024. The World No.2 secured victory by one shot at Kasumigaseki Country Club from Slovakia’s Rory Sabbatini at the last Olympics.

In the red, white and blue corner is also Collin Morikawa. The 2021 Open champion and the 2020 PGA Champion had a good year in the major championships in 2024, coming tied for third at the Masters, tied for fourth at the PGA Championship and in the top 20 at The Open and the US Open.

He competed for Team USA with Schauffele in 2021 and with six PGA Tour wins to his name, Morikawa adds much experience and class to this squad heading to the venue that hosted the Ryder Cup in 2018.

Wyndham Clark makes up the men’s roster in France. He won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am this year to continue his hot run of form over the last 12 months which has seen him become a PGA Tour winner and a major champion.

Clark held off Rory McIlroy to win the 2023 US Open at Los Angeles Country Club, one month after winning the Wells Fargo Championship and breaking through on the US circuit.

The United States also won the women’s gold medal last time. Nelly Korda took home the famous accolade and she will look to defend it in what has been the year of her career. She won five times in a row earlier in the season and won six times in seven tournaments, confirming her dominance over the women’s game.

Lilia Vu will join Korda in Paris too. The 26-year-old missed April and May with injury, but it didn’t take her long to return to the winner’s circle in June when securing the Meijer LPGA Classic.

Together, Korda and Vu have four major titles. Vu won the AIG Women’s Open at Walton Heath in 2023 and won the Chevron Championship earlier that season. The final member of Team USA at the Olympics is Rose Zhang.

After a stunning amateur career, Zhang made her professional debut at last year’s Mizuho Americas Open and she won it. She also made her Solheim Cup debut in Spain at the end of 2023, helping America to a 14-14 draw which meant the trophy stayed in European hands.

Zhang has taken to the LPGA Tour like a duck to water at 21 years of age. She won the Cognizant Founders Cup in 2024 and will have as good a chance as any of winning a gold medal in August.
