The event will be held at Le Golf National in Guyancourt, southwest of central Paris – the venue that hosted the Ryder Cup in 2018.

Xander Schauffele won the gold medal for America last time out, as he shot 18-under-par in Tokyo.

This will be the fifth time that golf has appeared on the Olympic program, with the sport taking a 112-year hiatus from 1904 to 2016.

Frequently Asked Questions about golf at the Olympics

When and where will the golf take place?

The Olympics got underway in Paris on Friday 26th July. The men’s golf competition will be spread across four days, beginning on August 1 and ending on the 4. The event will be held at Le Golf National, in Guyancourt, southwest of central Paris – the venue that hosted the Ryder Cup in 2018.

60 men’s players will compete for the medals in the individual stroke play event in Paris.

Who won last time out?

Xander Schauffele won gold at the Tokyo 2020 (played in 2021) Olympics at Kasumigaseki Country Club. The American finished on 18-under-par, with Slovakia’s Rory Sabbatini taking silver on 17-under-par, and C.T. Pan collecting the bronze medal for Chinese Taipei.

What is the history of golf at the Olympics?

Golf made its Olympic debut in 1900, and returned four years later in St. Louis. However, golf would be absent from the Olympics program for the next 112 years, before making its long-awaited return at the 2016 games in Rio, and then Tokyo in 2020.

The event features a men’s and women’s individual tournament that is decided over four days.

How do golfers qualify to play in the Olympics?

The Official World Golf Rankings determined who qualified for the event. The top-15 world-ranked players were assured of a spot in Paris, with a limit of four players from each nation.

The rest of the field qualified based on how many world ranking points they accumulate.

Is there a cut at the Olympics?

The format for the tournament is a standard stroke play event, and it will not include a cut after 36 holes, meaning all 60 players in the men’s event will compete across four rounds.

Can LIV Golf players feature in the event?

The Official World Golf Ranking, which is used to determine Olympic Games qualification, does not recognise LIV Golf events. This means that players who compete in the LIV Golf League are at a disadvantage when it comes to qualification.

Despite having to rely heavily on his performances at the four majors, Spain’s John Rahm will be one of six LIV Golfers who will compete for their nation at the Olympics.

How can I watch the golf at the Olympics?

The event will be broadcast around the world by various broadcast partners. In the United Kingdom, action from all four days of the tournament will be shown on BBC Sport and Eurosport, and available to stream on Discover + and BBC iPlayer – the schedule is as follows:

  • Thursday 1st August – BBC/Eurosport from 8 am
  • Friday 2nd August – BBC/Eurosport from 8 am
  • Saturday 3rd August – BBC/Eurosport from 8 am
  • Sunday 4th August – BBC/Eurosport from 8 am

How much will the winner take home from the Olympics?

For the first time in Olympic history, World Athletics have become the first sport to announce it will be offering all winners 50,000 US dollars in Paris.

However, golfers will only receive money for winning medals if their country’s Olympic committees decide to offer financial rewards.
