‘I couldn’t care less’: LIV star provides perfect response to world ranking row

While the rebels continue to kick up a fuss about their OWGR fiasco, Harold Varner III is taking a rather different approach

It’s the debate we’re all tired of but equally can’t get enough of. Should LIV Golf be given Official World Golf Ranking points?

Well, after moan upon moan from Greg Norman’s cartel that his league “deserve” those precious OWGR points, finally we’ve found one LIV star who isn’t afraid to say it how it really is.

Speaking ahead of LIV Jeddah – the penultimate event of the new tour’s maiden season – Harold Varner III was thrust in front of the media spotlight alongside Dustin Johnson and Graeme McDowell, who, just as frenemies Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka had a week earlier, continued the anti-OWGR chorus.

“The word ‘official’ has to go away from OWGR if they don’t take care of the players out here,” McDowell said. “I feel like LIV have tried to do everything they possibly can to be legitimate.”

But then up stepped HV3, one of LIV’s newer recruits who’s already received heaps of praise for admitting why he joined the league in the first place. And, just as he did on that occasion after he joined LIV Golf, quickly provided the perfect response to all the turmoil.

“For me, we knew what we were getting into,” Varner said. “I think it’s easy to sit here and say what could happen, what should happen. But obviously for me, I knew what was going to happen. It wasn’t going to be easy.

Amid LIV’s ongoing ploy to gain points through merging with the MENA Tour, Varner then admitted the situation is “funny” and that he “couldn’t care less” if he get points or not. Incredible.

“I think the people at LIV did an unbelievable job, because I don’t know about the check marks,” he continued. “Honestly I couldn’t care less. I knew exactly what was going to happen. I knew what could happen in my career and I accept that.

“I’ve had a great time out here. So the world ranking thing, it’s just been a part of golf for so long, and now all of a sudden some feathers have been ruffled. It’s awkward, but it’s funny. It is what it is.

“It’s sad sometimes. But I just laugh and keep going and keep playing golf.”
