The Genesis Scottish Open is a special event held at the Renaissance Club in East Lothian, on Scotland’s east coast.

The tournament has found a permanent home, just over the fence from Muirfield, and the venue has played host to some great winners, including Robert MacIntyre, Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele.

The Genesis Scottish Open has managed to secure the perfect spot on the calendar just before The Open Championship, allowing the players the opportunity to hone their games around the demands of links golf.

Not only does the event host a top-class field each year, but the prize money has also increased significantly, given its status as a Rolex Series event on the DP World Tour.

In 2023, Rory McIlroy snatched victory from the hands of Robert MacIntyre on the 72nd hole, cutting a memorable 2 iron into the wind on his way to a superb winning birdie.

The Northern Irishman pocketed $1,575,000 for his troubles. The total purse for the 2024 event was $9 million once again, and the winner received $1,575,000 again, That time, it was MacIntyre.

He holed a huge birdie putt on the 72nd hole to beat Adam Scott and win the title he had always wanted to win.

“It’s unbelievable. My reaction when the ball dropped on 18 said it all. I almost lost my voice now. It’s the one I wanted and it’s the one I got. It’s just, I’ve watched it as a kid growing up, and it meant a lot. It was really the only one that I could go and watch,” MacIntyre said.

“I can’t believe it’s happened.”

Alex Noren won the Scottish Open in 2016 at Castle Stuart and banked $541,668 out of the $3,250,000 purse. Such is the direction of prize money and inflation in the game at this point, it is no surprise that the purse at this event has nearly tripled in the space of nine years.

It dwarfs even the other PGA Tour event in the same week – the ISCO Championship – which has a $4 million purse and was won by Englishman Harry Hall in 2024.
