Ball speed is something that gets talked about endlessly when new drivers are released, but should it be affecting your putter choice? Odyssey’s research would suggest so, and it has led to two brand new putter ranges with AI-designed club faces.

Odyssey Ai-One and Ai-One Milled Putters: The Technology

Odyssey have some of the biggest tour stars on their roster. If they want them to put a new putter in play, it needs to be good, and it needs to improve their game fundamentally. This led to the question, what do tour pros need to be better at putting?

If a PGA Tour pro is 34 feet from the pin, that’s eleven paces away; they are more likely to three-putt than to single putt. Once a PGA Tour pro gets to 8ft from the hole, they are just as likely to miss as they are to hole the putt; from 15ft, they only have a 25% chance of single putting.

Holing putts is very difficult, so should two putting more often be the objective rather than trying to hole out more? If so, we need to dial in our pace control.

What controls pace control? Ball speed. The biggest factor affecting ball speed is a mis-strike, a ball hit high or low on the face or off-centre on the toe or heel will cause inconsistent ball speed numbers and mean you hit the same length putt a variety of distances.

The question for Odyssey then became, could Artifical Intelligence (Ai), design a club face that made ball speed more consistent, so you can three putt less often?

Ai-One Insert

The face insert is where all the magic happens in these putters. In the Ai-One putter range the back of the insert is textured with AI-designed contours to help provide consistent ball speed across the putter face. That means whether you strike it out of the toe or the middle of the face, the ball speed should stay consistent.

If you are a White Hot insert lover, don’t panic. Odyssey has co-moulded the White Hot urethane into the striking surface of this insert to provide that classic soft White Hot feel that has been so popular with club and tour golfers.

Ai-One Milled Insert

In the Ai-One Milled putter range, we see this same textured pattern on the back of the putter face. The difference here is this is a fully milled putter so this is milled from titanium and doesn’t include the white hot insert.

Ai Window

Technology is great, but it is much easier to believe and understand when you can see it. That’s why Odyssey have added ‘windows’ into the club heads of the Ai-One range to allow you to see the technology inside. They use Panolite, a unique polymer, to showcases that topology on the back of the club face.

StrokeLab 90 Shaft

The Stroke Lab shaft has been updated for 2024, and this evolution has lost the graphite. The new design has a 90-gram steel shaft that has 20 – 30 grams of counterbalance weight in the butt end of the club, depending on which grip is selected.

Interchangeable weights

The sole features interchangeable weights that allow each player to dial in the head weight to their feel preferences. These are available in 5, 10, 15 and 20 grams options.
