Benross HTX compressor irons review

Review: Benross HTX Compressor irons

Why aren’t more people using Benross irons? It's nothing to do with the performance writes equipment editor James Savage

Our Benross HTX Compressor irons review took place at the Golf Shack at Moor Allerton in Leeds.

We were very impressed with the original Benross HTX irons but they have now been updated with new tech for 2017.

Benross HTX Compressor irons review – First impressions

Benross HTX Compressor irons review

Like last time around we have two models – a regular and a Type-R.

The regular is a bit chunkier and will appeal more to those who need a bit of help getting the ball in the air.

We’ve got a bit more technology in the Type-R model, a nicer finish and a slightly sleeker look at address.

Both come in at very friendly price points which is what you would expect from Benross.

But the components are very good with a KBS shaft and a Lamkin Grip UTx in the samples we tested.

Benross HTX Compressor irons review – The technology

There’s heel and toe weighing for more stability in the regular model and a dampner is used in the cavity of the Type-R for better sound and feel.

Both have heat-treated faces which Benross say will improves ball speeds.

Benross HTX Compressor irons review – The results

A very solid performance from both of these irons as you can see from the Trackman data below.

The numbers are very similar to that of the Mizuno JPX900 Hot Metal which I have used out on the course for much of the past year.

Out of the two, I’d definitely be leaning towards the Type-R for its sleeker look and it feels to be a bit more workable.

The regular model is great for people who need help getting the ball in the air.

Hitting the ball too high is a problem for me so I felt like I lost a little bit of control with them.

Benross HTX Compressor irons review – NCG verdict

Both these irons are fantastic value for money.

Even if they were the same price as some of the bigger brands we’d be struggling to identify areas where the performance is weaker.

Possibly the sound and feel is one area where the Mizuno was better but Mizuno tend to out-preform most brands on this front.

So why aren’t more people using Benross irons? Vanity and snobbery are a couple of reasons I can think of.

They just aren’t as fashionable and people might assume that because they are cheaper they are not as good as everything else.

We think more people should give them a try and don’t think they will disagree with us when they see the results.
