PXG 0311 Black Ops Hybrid Review

What’s new? How much does it cost? And how does it perform? Hannah Holden brings you the low down on the new PXG 0311 Black Ops hybrid

PXG have really upped their game this year, bringing out their best woods lineup to date with the Black Ops series. In January 2024, I travelled down to PXG London South to get fit and have my clubs built, so how did I find the hybrid? Find out in our PXG 0311 Black Ops hybrid review.

NCG SUMMARY

This is a brilliant hybrid full of interesting technology. I love the way it sits behind the golf ball. The shaping sits nicely between an iron-like hybrid and a wood-like hybrid.

The performance is brilliant; the carbon crown drags the centre of gravity to make this easier to hit and easier to launch, giving me a great flight that is going to be easy to control into the greens.

PROS

  • Looks brilliant behind the ball
  • Feels really solid
  • Ideal high flight

CONS

  • None

PXG 0311 Black Ops Hybrid Review: First Impressions

Straight away I had a great feeling about this hybrid. The shape of the head is ideal, with an iron-like square leading edge but a more curved rest of the club head. This is a nice balance between an iron-like hybrid and a more fairway wood shaping.

This hybrid can be made 3 degrees flatter in lie angle, which means it doesn’t have that upright, shut look that makes you feel like you can’t hit the club anywhere but left. The hybrid has a real high-end quality look to it, too, with the carbon crown on show.

NCG Verdict

A 200-yard shot is one I am faced, often when firing into long par-4s and par-5s when I play longer courses in national championships. My recent gamer has been a small-headed 5 wood that isn’t great out of scruffy lies and is pretty tricky to hit low. This is the club that is most at risk for me to tinker, so when I was handed a new hybrid to test, the feeling in PXG’s state-of-the-art fitting room became a lot more serious.

The new 0311 Black Ops hybrid is packed full of interesting technology to optimise ball flight and give a higher MOI. A hybrid is used more for hitting at greens than just for distance, so its more about optimal launch than it is about raw clubhead speed, and PXG have done a great job with this. It has interchangeable weight ports to dial in swing weight and control face angle, it has a high strength high grade carbon fiber crown to drop the centre of gravity.

It also features a high speed face design which is 10.5% thinner than previous models so that ball speeds remain high on shots all across the clubface.

Straight away, I loved this hybrid. I found that the fade bias and less upright settings on the club gave me brilliant clubface control, and I hit all of my shots within a few yards of each other. What was really impressive was how high the ball went. A peak height of 90 feet with a hybrid is brilliant, so even though it’s launching quickly off the new face material, it is still at a flight that is going to stop on a green.

Below is the data from my session at PXG’s state-of-the-art fitting centre in south London. I was fitted into the Tensei Blue 75 stiff shaft, which matches the shaft that goes into the 3 wood and my driver. The heaviest sole weight was put into the back weight port just to give a slightly higher launch and a more forgiving club. The weights can be moved around the sole to make the club more or less draw or fade-biased and to really manipulate the trajectory of the shot.

trackman data

The PXG hybrid fitted the gap in my bag so well that it went straight into the bag along with the fairway wood. The Black Ops clubs feel and sound brilliant thanks to their precision weighting technology, it has a great peak height and spin, and goes exactly as far as it needs to. I travelled to America with the hybrid in the bag and used it wonderfully around Cabot Citrus Farms, and it will likely stay in the bag for the rest of the season! It is well worth finding your nearest PXG fitting centre and giving it a go!
