Callaway Premium Puffer Vest review: First Impressions
Gilets are so often overlooked in the golfing world. Many people tend to opt for waterproof jackets or mid-layers because they have sleeves. Actually, gilets come into a category of their own because they can be used as mid-layers or outer layers. This one is a heavy gilet, so it’ll keep your torso really warm during those windy days, but it’s not too heavy when you pick it up. I actually prefer gilets over waterproofs as they offer unbeatable freedom of movement and the lack of sleeves is more of a help than a hinderance.
The body warmer is made from Primaloft fibres to keep the wearer warm, dry and comfortable. These fibres differ from normal ones because they trap warmth, repel water and are super soft.
It’s also packed with Swing Tech technology. Through special seam construction and materials, Callaway can provide golfers with less restriction and more stretch to maximise range of motion in every swing. This revolutionary technology was introduced in 2019 and can also be found in Callaway’s range of shorts and polo shirts.
Callaway Premium Puffer Vest review: On The Course
I take a size UK small in tops as I have a slender build. The gilet performs at its best when it’s zipped up as it stays out of the way when you’re playing. What really stood out to me was the warmth that was on offer here. It feels insulated to the brim with quilted padding to the front and back. Lightweight yet thermal warmth at the same time? Yes please!
It’s also waterproof thanks to Callaway’s durable water repellent finish (DWR). This is a coating added to waterproof garments, which helps moisture bead up and roll off the outer fabric. The only thing that the gilet is missing is a hood, as when it’s raining keeping your head dry becomes paramount.
With that niggle out of the way, the two full zip hand pockets were my next favourite feature after the oodles of warmth this golf vest has on offer. They’re deep, super deep in fact, and they’ll help your digits stay warm. I tested this outfit on a cold day and didn’t even need to wear my golf mitts as the pockets were enough to keep my hands nice and toasty.
Take note of the back of the gilet in the image above; the thick padding of the vest almost looks military-grade, which prevents the wind from crashing into you from behind and blowing you off balance whilst you’re walking.
Callaway Premium Puffer Vest review: The 19th hole
I have worn this gilet on a number of occasions, both on and off the course. It’s the perfect companion at this time of the year when the cold starts to bite. In rain it remains waterproof throughout. In warmer weather you’ll probably end up a bit hot and sweaty given how effectively it heated me up in the cold.
It’s really trendy too. I’d be more than happy to keep wearing this gilet when I’m not on the course even when it’s raining, as I’d just throw an umbrella up. Weirdly enough, it’s actually making me enjoy the cold snap we’re going through currently!
