Puma Phantomcat Nitro+ Golf Shoe: First Impressions

My first impressions of these shoes were really impressive.

They felt sturdy in hand and looked really smart, a clean white look across the top with subtle Puma branding on the heel (x2) and on the outer panel of the shoe.

I am a huge fan of how the sole is designed, a bright green floor with orange grips certainly adds discreet swagger to the whole shoe.

After trying them on they felt very comfortable and supportive straight away, plenty of cushion across the bottom of the foot which felt like you could walk for days on!

NCG Verdict

From the outset, Puma have really nailed the balance between style and performance. They look great and there’s plenty to unpack around the technology included in the shoes.

Firstly, the whole sole of the shoe is a very exciting innovation by Puma. The addition of the Flexspike especially so. Usually for cleated shoes you find they add a significant weight, however the rubberised version makes the shoe 37% lighter than it would be if they were to include normal cleats.

The performance of these was also very good, with the summer testing conditions not being optimal for summer they proved to be very effective and offered substantial grip throughout the testing rounds. The sole also compliments the traction and grip with ‘spined secondary traction’ to further the stability which was certainly apparent.

Despite the shoe being designed as lighter they still felt extremely durable and flexible. They are built with a premium leather which looked great but are also designed to be waterproof which actually comes with a 1 year guarantee.

The sole of the shoe also fed into this durability, a nice solid plastic gave you assurance in the support of the design. Despite it being a plastic base, it didn’t hamper the flexibility at all, there was no resistance to any strange foot position or when hitting standard shots.

The Nitrocat Phantom’s were also extremely comfortable, even fresh out of the box I had no discomfort throughout the testing rounds through tightness. They felt extremely light throughout the round and had no signs of weighing you down despite the innovative Flexspike technology.

The heel features were also interesting and efficient, they are designed with innovative nitro foam material which is infused with nitrogen gas, this resulted in excellent cushioning around the base of the heel which made for a very comfortable 36 holes of golf.

Priced at £140 they are certainly on the more expensive side of apparel, however based on others available I think this is a fair price with the technology involved. Furthermore, the sturdiness of the shoes does add to the value for money.

It is built with high quality materials to ensure durability so if looked after well you can certainly get your fair share of golf out of these before even considering your next pair. They are also fitted with a waterproof membrane so are suitable for a wide range of weather conditions.

The testing days weren’t the most ideal for ‘summer testing’ but certainly workable so we did experience some wet conditions of which I am pleased to say the shoes stood up to damp wet weather we have experienced this year in April.

Puma Phantomcat Nitro+ Spikeless Golf Shoe

Overall, these are one of my favourite releases this year and will certainly be getting a lot of use for myself. The design looks great, the comfort was ideal and I was really impressed with the tech included.

I think these would be a great option for all golfers in the summer ahead, and would certainly recommend exploring them further.
