Straight out of the box, the Rife Black Edition 001 makes a bold statement. I think its complete blackout design is sleek and contemporary. A matte satin black PVD-plated finish provides a stealthy, premium look without falling into the trap of being overly flashy. I like that the contrast created by the crisp white alignment line against the dark head makes lining up putts remarkably easy. For me, this is a welcome feature, as on a blade putter I find alignment can often be tricky.

Crafted from 304 stainless steel, the putter exudes quality. It features fixed weights that, while not adjustable, do deliver increased stability through greater forgiveness. This subtle weighting design reduces the tendency for the face to twist on off-centre strikes. As a result I was able to maintain distance control and direction even when you don’t quite catch the middle of the face.
There’s also some clever face technology at play. The Black Edition 001 incorporates grooves across the face, which serve two key functions. I found they enhance the soft feel at impact and promote a quicker, truer roll of the ball off the face. Both features were noticeable during my testing of the putter, with putts from eight to ten feet feeling particularly satisfying.
On course, the Black Edition 001 delivers everything you’d want from a classic blade design. The feel is soft yet responsive, giving me a greater feedback on shorter putts without sacrificing consistency on longer rolls.
