Callaway has once again raised the bar in golf ball innovation with the release of the Callaway Chrome Tour X. I had previously held the standard Callaway Chrome Tour model as the best in the line-up, but this may have just pipped it. Read our Callaway Chrome Tour X review to find out why…

NCG SUMMARY

This really is a quality golf ball. Available in multiple different design options I suspect that a few tour pros will have this in the bag at some point this season. The levels of control and spin when hitting into the greens with a wedge or an iron was fantastic.

Additionally, the performance off the tee was equally as impressive. Fast ball speed allowed for impressive distances with the driver. This is a premium golf ball and Callaway’s best one yet.

PROS

  • Unmatched spin rates, especially on wedge shots
  • Excellent control with irons
  • High-quality urethane cover for great greenside performance
  • Fast ball speeds off the driver

CONS

  • Slightly higher launch on drives (may not suit high-ball hitters)
  • Not the absolute longest ball available

Callaway Chrome Tour X Golf Ball Review: First Impressions

This high-performance golf balls is available in various designs, including Triple Track, Track 360, and standard yellow variations, offering a variety of options for golfers who prefer non-white and patterned balls.

NCG Verdict

One of the standout features of the Chrome Tour X is its high-performance Tour urethane soft cover, similar to that of the Chrome Soft and Chrome Tour. This ensures a consistent feel around the greens, and I noticed no significant change in greenside spin compared to its predecessors.

The ball looks great, feels excellent off the clubface, and rolls smoothly off the putter. With no visible seam, the Chrome Tour X provided exceptional consistency for me and my short game, regardless of where I struck the ball on the club face.

Callaway Chrome Tour X review

Spin performance on the Chrome Tour X was truly remarkable. Testing wedge spin from 50 yards, I recorded an average spin rate of 8,300 RPM—the highest I’ve ever tested. This ball provides a low launch and high spin, making it a standout performer for short game control.

Callaway Chrome Tour X review

With a 7-iron, the Chrome Tour X continued to impress. My average spin rate reached 6,800 RPM, with one shot even surpassing 7,000 RPM, which I had never achieved before. Ball speed was an impressive 118 mph, and while carry distance averaged 161 yards, what truly set this ball apart was its incredible control.

Off the tee, the Chrome Tour X delivered fast speeds. With a ball speed of 159 mph and a spin rate of 2,600 RPM, this ball provided an optimal balance of speed and control. It launched slightly higher compared to both the Chrome Soft and Chrome Tour, which could be a consideration for golfers who naturally hit a high ball. The average carry I was able to hit was 273 yards, with a total distance of 290 yards, which is a strong result for a ball designed for precision.

Callaway Chrome Tour X review

Overall, it offers unmatched spin control into the greens, exceptional feel, and fast ball speeds off the driver. This makes it a top-tier option for skilled players who demand precision. While it may not be the longest ball in the market, its control and consistency make it a great choice.

If you’re seeking elite-level control, high spin, and premium feel, the Callaway Chrome Tour X golf ball should be at the top of your list. I’d be eager to see which Callaway Tour professionals put this ball in their bag, as it is undoubtedly one of the best Callaway golf balls to date.

At the time of writing this article it is interesting to note that the Callaway Chrome Tour X ball has already had a victory in 2025, courtesy of Thomas Detry at the 2025 Phoenix Open.

About the author

Callaway Epic Max driver review
Jack Backhouse

A member of the PGA for 13 years, Jack has lived golf for more than half his life. Inspired by Tiger Wood’s winning putt at the 2008 US Open, an obsession began with watching slow motion golf swings on the internet and reading What’s In The Bag articles in magazines.

Not destined for a life behind the desk in a pro shop, Jack has focussed more on coaching, working closely with regional teams in North Yorkshire and helping golfers of all levels on their journey to enjoying playing the game more. Jack has coached many junior golfers into the county teams, and once worked with a player at the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie.

After letting his game fall apart prior to COVID, Jack rediscovered his love for playing golf after joining Silloth Golf Club in 2020 and whipping round the windy, firm links course. Playing regularly with a half set of clubs he has a passion for shot making and developing skill, and claims to have the sharpest 30-100 yard game in the North of England (only because he doesn’t know anyone in the South), and now maintains a +1 handicap at a club much closer to home, Sand Moor GC.

Jack has always tinkered with his equipment, once building his own Frankenstein one length set of clubs after watching Bryson DeChambeau burst onto the scene after winning the US Amateur. He firmly believes in getting custom fit and is happy to debate anyone about blade irons being superior to any other iron category.

Jack loves: playing quickly, 2 ball golf, match play, heathland courses, pencil bags, foursomes, Tiger Wood’s swing 2005-2009.

Jack hates: buggies, unnecessary trees, giving shots, the 7 iron loft debate, graphite shaft lovers weird superiority complex.
