With so many options for golf bags now, we test the latest Ping lightweight carry bag. I have many golf bags but have been on the look out for a smaller bag for summer use. It was fortunate then that I was asked to try this bag out. Where does it fit in the hierarchy of golf bags? Let’s find out as I put it to the test and give you my verdict in the Ping Moonlander carry bag review.

First Impressions

I tested the white/ Mr Ping design which was both unusual and attractive. The top is about 21-22 cm in diameter and has 4 dividers and a grab handle. It is definitely one of the smaller bags available that can hold 14 clubs. I found that it did so with a bit of a squeeze but that is only to be expected for a smaller bag. A bit of judicious club organisation helps with this. As I only carry 8 or 9 clubs, if I am not playing a competition, this bag was perfect.

Its small size belies its many features. It has a water bottle pocket on the front, where, on many bags, there is a ball pocket and this helps to give it a more compact appearance. On one side there is a ball pocket and accessories pocket. The other side has large apparel pocket with an internal slip pocket and key clip. At the top of this is a valuables pocket (or possibly a rangefinder pocket). Regardless, it has ample well thought out storage for a small bag. In addition there is a towel loop, rain hood and umbrella holder. The straps are adjustable and can be converted to a single strap, should you so desire. It feels well made and hard wearing. The bag is compatible with the Prodi-G club risers which are for the shorter Ping junior clubs.

The base is flat so can sit on a trolley without too much twisting should the need arise. At 2 kg it is fairly light. It was very comfortable to carry with 14 clubs. The stand goes up easily when required which is not true of every stand bag I have owned.

NCG Verdict

So, who is this for? If you are looking for a small carry bag with a stand, it is hard not to recommend this bag. It is very compact but with enough storage to carry some extra clothing and all the paraphernalia necessary should the weather take a turn for the worse. It has a quality feel to it and the pockets have been well designed. This is not simply a small bag with a couple of pockets thrown on for good measure. I really like a small carry bag and for me this is the perfect “go-to” summer carry bag – one which I will be using a lot over the summer!
