MacGregor V-Foil #4 Putter
The MacGregor V-Foil #4 takes a very similar appearance to the more well-known Spider putter from TaylorMade. Unlike the the Spider the price tag of the MacGregor is considerably less.
I can’t say I’ve ever used a putter that makes a sound like this one. The MacGregor V-Foil putter makes a tinging sound when it makes contact with the ball. This sound doesn’t alter depending on stroke length. As I’m not accustomed to this sound it was a little off-putting as I wasn’t expecting it but after many putts, it became less noticeable.
Speaking of the face, when you look down on this putter you can see the metal face insert that includes the ARC Tech face milling that aims to provide an improved roll and distance control. On either side of this is two yellow rubber inserts. I wasn’t sure what would happen to the ball upon colliding with these but after a couple of purposeful toe strikes, I didn’t really see any difference in roll or distance.
Overall, the MacGregor V-Foil might not be everyone’s choice of putter but if you’re not after a big brand with a big price tag this is a great budget option that will certainly still get the ball in the hole.

Ram Golf FX77 irons
Ram Golf have created something really good here. The FX77s have strong lofts and a lot of offset so you really feel like the club is going to work for and help you, but they have a thin enough top line to make you feel like you are still using players’ clubs.
I was blown away after just one shot as the ball seemed to rocket off the face. I knew that the FX77 irons had strong lofts, but they’re no stronger than similar clubs on the market, so I was pretty surprised to see the 9-iron shots carrying near to 150 yards, with one landing at 156.
I was really pleased with how solid the FX77 irons felt on off-centre hits though. This is an important factor for the player’s distance irons as the golfer they’re aimed at probably doesn’t find the centre every time. It was noticeable however that the clubs seemed to mark or scuff up quite quickly with my strike pattern starting to show up after just 10 or so shots.
These are a brilliant set of irons that I recommend to anyone who needs more distance but is shopping on a budget. These may be the best value irons out in the market right now, and probably the longest I’ve hit all year so be sure to check them out!

Takomo 301MB irons
I love the clean, simple design of these irons; they have a thin sole and minimal offset, which gives you a real player’s feel. The top line, however, isn’t super thin, so at address, you do feel like you’ve got a chance of hitting some good shots.
The blade iron should be the easiest, but I think can be the most difficult iron to design and release from manufacturers. There’s not a great deal of technology that can be included to make them loads better than another blade, but there’s also a whole cohort of golf traditionalists who are looking to discredit your irons as not ‘pure’ enough.
I found controlling the flight in terms of trajectory and shot shape really easy with the Takomo 301 MB irons. I love hitting it higher and lower and attempting to work shots into different flag positions on the green. This isn’t always the most sensible approach to golf, but it makes it loads of fun, and the Takomo’s amplify this.
Something else that works well with these irons is how well you can make a combo set with them with Takomo’s 301 CB iron. Not everyone wants to look down at a blade 4 and 5-iron, so having the added help and forgiveness from the CB is a brilliant option.
These are now my regular gamers and will likely be so for the end of the year.

Ram Golf Tour Grind wedges
The Ram Golf Tour Grind wedges are an absolute bargain price but look in no way like a discount club. The grooves look sharp and deep, the face is milled, and they have a solid weight to them that gives you the confidence you are going to be able to flight in a low spinny pitch on demand.

I started the testing session with some full shots, and really liked the low flight the Tour Grind wedge produced. I don’t like to see the ball get too high as it feels out of control, but that wasn’t an issue at all as they launched pretty low with loads of spin. Distance isn’t an important measurable with wedges but they went exactly the same distance as the Vokeys I currently play.
The Ram Golf Tour Grind wedge comes in a variety of lofts, but you don’t get any bounce options as you do with the ‘premium’ brands, which I think will be a limiting factor for some people. Selecting a bounce that compliments your technique and the course you play at has become a big part of wedge fitting recently so just having one option per loft is quite restricting.
Another custom fitting issue is not being able to order custom options like shaft material or grip style or size, however, I suppose this is part of the reason why they are such an unbelievable price.
Overall I think Ram Golf have done a brilliant job with the Tour Grind wedge, and there is no reason why you couldn’t have an elite short game using these wedges. To have face milling on a wedge that costs less than £40 is crazy, and the control the spin gives you is top-notch.

MacGregor CG3000 package set
MacGregor have put together a really good beginner set of clubs, but its the smaller details are what stand out initially. The bag is great, comfy to carry and has lots of pocket space. The headcovers on the woods are quality and the colour scheme looks really good throughout the set.

The first thing I love about this set is the club selection. As a coach to beginners, it can often be confusing for new players who turn up with 14 clubs and ask what are they all supposed to do, as often they have 4 or 5 clubs in the bag that do exactly the same thing.
The CG3000 set goes from SW – 6 iron, and then has a 5 hybrid, 5 wood and driver, which is more than enough to get going. I actually think there’s a lot of experienced players than would benefit from going to this set make up.
This isn’t something I often think is a good thing but for beginners who probably arent very consistent, high launch and high spin means the ball is going to stay in the air for longer which will increase their enjoyment when playing.
You can tell Macgregor have put a lot of thought into this beginner set, as they have nailed pretty much everything about it. You get a choice of bags when ordering, stand or trolley, and even can choose a longer or shorter shaft so that the irons are more suited to your body type.

Ram Golf FX Fairway Wood
The Ram FX fairway wood has a matte black crown and is a lovely round shape. The face is a fraction on the deep side, but it’s made from premium materials and has a modern design and technology to make it more aerodynamic and has a sole design that reduces turf drag.
The shots out the middle feel really hot, and the numbers back that up. There is a little variance in the spin, but I couldn’t confirm whether that was my fault or the club’s. What I do know is that it goes an awful long way for £69.99.

I very much enjoyed the flat trajectory the FX fairway wood produced; at my ball speed, it’s no issue, but other golfers may need to loft up to the 18-degree head to get optimal launch conditions.
I absolutely recommend that golfers on a budget have a look at this fairway wood. You can get some fairly decent clubs second-hand nowadays, but to get a brand new fairway wood that performs as well as this at under £70 is unbelievable. Ram golf have once again knocked it out of the park.
