Last year’s SIM Max rescue was extremely successful for TaylorMade and I don’t think even they could have predicted how much it would be used by its roster of tour stars.
Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson were just two of the players to put it in play – and DJ even had two in play when he won the Travelers Championship.
This year TaylorMade have expanded their hybrid line up and added a SIM2 offering to the existing Max model.

TaylorMade SIM2 hybrids: First impressions
The SIM2 has an all-black finish and more iron-like shaping whereas the SIM2 Max has kept similar shape and styling to last year’s offering.
I really liked last year’s Max model and I am pleased to see it hasn’t changed too much this year in terms of shape. I do really like the new colour scheme though. I also think TaylorMade have been really clever with the styling of the SIM2 model as it is so different. The all-black finish looks great and will definitely intrigue non hybrid players to give it a go.
But why did TaylorMade need this new model?
I asked Tomo Bysted, senior director of product creation at TaylorMade, to give me some insight into why and how this model was developed.
“One of the things that we have been working on for a while is this other players rescue that has modern technology.
“It has been a has been a bit of a tough one to solve. We wanted to take all of the best elements of the ones that we’ve done before, and had been in the market before, and put them in a new club.
“But to really nail the launch conditions for that, we had to get some tour feedback – so that was the only club we had out on tour last year to get feedback on. So early to mid last year, we secretly tested it. We had people come in the Kingdom and at a few tour events we had a couple of guys hit on the range, just to get feedback. We had these mules that were camouflaged up, we were trying to dial in the right launch window for that club so launch spin sort of left, right, because we knew that it had to be different from the Max right.
“The main point of making a second rescue was well we got to make it perform differently people are looking for different things in these hybrids.
“I think we really nailed that recipe for this one. So it’s a little bit of a more flatter launch and it spins a bit more so it’s more workable.
“But it still has that three slot speed pocket and that really fast C300 face so we’re still getting maximum ball speed out of it. Which is not sort of what the old clubs in this category had, they were a little bit slower.
“We’re also able to get a tonn of forgiveness in this club so it’s not really just for even for good players it’s actually for a lot of golfers who just prefer that different look to it.
“Obviously it’s all black as well, but more of an iron style performance so that was one that again tour players had a lot of influence in nailing those launch conditions.”
TaylorMade SIM2 hybrids: The technology
TaylorMade SIM2: This has a completely different leading edge, sole and CG to the Max offering. It allows more workability and provides a more iron-like ball flight. It also has an adjustable hosel so you can get your desired ball flight.
TaylorMade SIM2 Max: Since last year the sole has been redesigned moving the weight around to lower CG and increase forgiveness.
