I knew about the riches associated with residents of Virginia Water before my first trip to Wentworth.
This didn’t prevent my jaw from hitting the floor of my car as I gently weaved through Wentworth Drive on my way to the tournament, stunned at the properties on show.
It is no wonder that Rory McIlroy has built a house in this area of leafy Surrey on the outskirts of London. It is a truly remarkable pocket of England, and like stepping into a virtual world of the wealthy and (possibly) famous.
There are many houses that peek through the looming trees that surround Wentworth Golf Club, home to the BMW PGA Championship and DP World Tour headquarters, which have been owned by golfers in the past.
Sam Torrance is said to be a Wentworth resident and member, as is Justin Rose. Ernie Els also once had a home by the 16th hole of the West Course.
You’d die for a look around them, wouldn’t you?
Well, this is the next best thing. We have taken a look on Zoopla, one of the UK’s leading websites for property searches, and nosey so-and-sos like me, and discovered some of the most expensive properties in the area.
Most expensive houses in Wentworth
Portnall Drive, Wentworth Estate
This six-bedroom detached house in Virginia Water is listed for £15 million. There are seven bathrooms and it adjoins the West Course.
There are landscaped gardens extending to just over four acres, a mid-century modernist landmark house and as many as five reception rooms. It is the former country estate of US Ambassador to the United Kingdom John Hay Whitney and was built in the 1930s.
As part of the design, emphasis was placed on a palette of fine stone, choice veneers, chromed steel and glass. It houses a cinema, study, laundry, wine cellar, plant room and a large garage. There is a spa, a relaxation suite and an underground swimming pool with a floor that rises to create an entertainment space.

East Drive, Wentworth
This property is slightly cheaper – it is listed for £13,950,000. There are seven bedrooms, six bathrooms, six reception rooms, and it is relatively new, having been completed in 2019.
It is located in what is called ‘the main island’ of the Wentworth Estate. It has a neo-classical design on a private plot of around one-and-a-half acres. The house has three floors – the ground floor features an open-plan family kitchen, a formal dining room, a drawing room and a study.
The lower ground floor has leisure facilities including a pool, a sauna, a steam room, a spa and a gym, rounded out with showers and changing facilities.
There is a bespoke bar area, a temperature-controlled wine room, and a cinema. Much like all of these properties, they have all the things that you could ever ask for in a home.

Abbots Drive, Virginia Water
We have a list in descending order here, so this one in Abbots Drive is listed for £13,500,000. There are eight bedrooms, seven bathrooms, a private pool, and a grand staircase.
In this property, there is a mightily impressive Smallbone chef’s kitchen with Sub-Zero appliances, a wine cooler and custom-built doors that open to the terrace. There is the principal suite that covers half of the first floor, which has garden views and a luxury bathroom.
There is certainly no shortage of facilities for a family, and this is largely thanks to there being a football pitch, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a steam room, a jacuzzi, a sunken outdoor seating area with a fire pit, an outdoor kitchen and BBQ, a games room, two bars and a gym. And breathe.

Wentworth Drive, Wentworth
This is another staggering and beautiful home that is listed for £13,000,000. There are six bedrooms and six bathrooms, set within grounds surrounded by tall pine trees behind large gates. This property is located opposite the 18th hole of the West Course.
You can find the principal suite upstairs, which has a terrace, dual dressing rooms and a luxury bathroom, along with four en-suite bedrooms.
Those who set foot inside will be met with a double‐height reception hall with a double staircase leading to formal rooms and an open‐plan kitchen. The leisure suite has an indoor swimming pool, spa and relaxation zones, with a wine room, tasting lounge and a cinema space.
East Drive, Wentworth
This is another property on East Drive, and it is listed for £12,000,000. This one has more bedrooms than the rest on this list, with 11. It has 11 bathrooms too. It is surrounded by magnificent gardens and combines incredible architecture with a stylish interior design.
The drawing room, dining room and sitting room were all constructed with natural light in mind. Seven of the bedrooms are designed with bespoke finishes, and a separate four-bedroom wing provides privacy for guests and staff.
Outside, there is a stunning sunken courtyard which is perfect for hosting guests. The manicured gardens reach around the house to the large driveway. There is a dedicated security lodge, garage and landscaped gardens.

Home Farm, Wentworth Drive, Wentworth
This property in Wentworth Drive is listed for £10,500,000, and the estate offers seven bedrooms in total, with a five-bedroom thatched main house set over two floors and a separate detached cottage. As of September 18, the property is on the market, but hasn’t been for over 30 years. Home Farm has a main thatched house with two floors that overlook the main gardens.
There is a detached cottage which has its own gardens, parking area and garage. There is also a large barn, which can be used for entertaining guests and as office space. Part of the charm is huge specimen trees, a koi carp pond and lawned gardens.

There is a tennis court, swimming pool and another walled garden for the secondary cottage. This is another truly astonishing property that spans just over two acres.
