Wentworth is a much-loved venue for players and fans on the DP World Tour, and has been for generations.
It was founded in 1922 in Virginia Water, Surrey, on the outskirts of London. It is home to the DP World Tour headquarters, formerly named the European Tour, and hosts the BMW PGA Championship, the circuit’s flagship event.
Golfers up and down the country grew up watching the World Match Play at Wentworth, which started there in 1964 and left after 2007. Clips still circulate on social media of Sir Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros, and Colin Montgomerie and other stars from that generation striping long irons into the lush greens of Surrey.
Now, fans flock to Wentworth for the BMW PGA. It is a mightily popular event, and part of the reason for that is the best European players always show up, as well as a smattering of American stars who fancy a trip over the pond.
Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood, Ludvig Aberg, Justin Rose and many other European stars have regularly teed it up, and UK golf fans thoroughly enjoy a trip to Wentworth.
Wentworth has two other 18-hole courses alongside the famous West, where the BMW PGA Championship is played. Harry Colt also designed the East Course, while Gary Player, John Jacobs and Bernard Gallacher designed the Edinburgh Course, which opened in 1990.
In 2014, the club was bought by the China-based Reignwood Group and introduced a debenture membership structure. Before that, the club had been open to the public, and it was more accessible for you and me to enjoy a round on the West Course.

How much does it cost to join Wentworth?
The widely reported membership figure at Wentworth used to be £175,000, and annual fees were said to be £16,000. This was about 10 years ago. Now, the figures are reported as being £200,000 and £20,000 respectively. Quite the sums.

Another option, as at many of the world’s most exclusive private clubs, is to be invited by a member. If you are lucky enough to know someone who frequents the famous grounds of Wentworth Drive, you should be able to play there, if you ask nicely enough.
There is no green fee, as such. The Wentworth website doesn’t have a visitor rate or allow you to book trolleys, like most golf courses. The membership section of the website encourages you to contact the club by phone or email should you like to join.
As part of the debenture membership, you can take advantage of the other facilities on offer at Wentworth, such as the tennis and health club. If you are a debenture member, you can also enjoy a one-year complimentary membership to the ‘City Club’ at Ten Trinity Square – a sanctuary in London featuring Michelin-star dining, a cigar lounge and a Four Seasons pool and spa.
