Gift ideas for golfers: Something for the tech fans
Christmas presents for golfers. Four words that will send a shiver down the spine of anyone who has ever picked up a club. Don’t worry, we know we are the hardest people on the planet to buy gifts for.
While my colleague Alex Perry has put together a few good ideas for the golfer in your life, my expertise is in equipment and gadgets – so here are a few of my favourite things on the market that will be sure to raise a smile on Christmas morning…
Gift ideas for golfers: Distance measuring device
We all have our own preferences when it comes to GPS devices. Some of us have a laser rangefinders, some of us have digital units or watches, and some of us have both.
In the rangefinder category there are plenty of options ranging from around the £100 mark up to around £600, so you’ll always find something in your budget.
If it’s a digital device you’re after then your choices again range from around £100 to £600. I’ve got a couple of GPS watches which I love, as they offer up my yardages at the flick of a wrist.
Not a watch wearer? Don’t worry, many aren’t. Luckily, there are plenty that clip onto your belt or bag. These can be as cheap as £80 for a basic model that simply offers yardages, with essentially more detail added depending on the amount of money you spend.
Lastly on DMDs, th Bushnell Wingman is a very cool piece of kit. It’s a golf GPS and a speaker all in one.
It clips onto your golf bag or trolley – and also has a magnet if you prefer a buggy – so you can listen to your favourite tunes while you practice (or even play, depending on your situation) and it will tell you your yardages at the touch of a button.
Or simply use is as a speaker around the house.
Gift ideas for golfers: Grips
I guarantee the golfer you’re buying for hasn’t updated their grips for a couple of years, so this would be more than welcome. Again, you’ll have to do a bit of detective work.
This is also an area in which you can add a bit of personalisation. The MCC Teams grips from Golf Pride are perfect for this. I’ve gone for Yorkshire green, while my colleagues have been fighting over the yellow and blue grips because apparently that’s what their football teams play in.
They’ll be extremely grateful when they start the season with a fresh pair of grips and they’ll be reminded about their beloved team on every shot. Win win.
Gift ideas for golfers: Practice nets
For the golfer who never wants to be off the course, why not bring their practice home with a pop up golf net?
This is perfect if you want something you can easily take down and store away and it doesn’t take up much space at all.
I’ve got the Forb net from Net World Sports, with which I’ve spent many an hour during the lockdowns.
Gift ideas for golfers: Training aids
With lockdowns and tiers and winter all playing their part in us not being able to get out and work on our game, it’s never been a better time to invest in a training aid.
I did a rundown of my favourite training aids earlier in the year, but my favourite by far is the PuttOut. Believe me when I say you’ll spend HOURS on this thing.
Gift ideas for golfers: Tees
Golfers always need more tees. They are the golf equivalent of hair pins or… something that men are always losing.
My personal favourites are the bamboo tees from Ocean Tee. I love what Ocean Tee are doing in a bid to make our game more sustainable, so you get to buy a good present for that golfer in your life and do your bit for the planet one tee shot at a time. Another win win.
Gift ideas for golfers: Winter gloves
Us Brits are definitely the only people mad enough to get out on the course no matter the weather so some winter gloves will go down well on those frosty mornings.
I usually opt for FootJoy’s WinterSof gloves while playing, then slip on a pair of FJ Winter Mitts between shots. Very cosy.
