Every year we see countless new training aids hit the market to help us improve our games. Whether it be alignment aids, technique gadgets or swing speed increases, there is something out there for every issue.

Most recently, I tested out the brand new Wedge Trainer to see how it can help improve my short game.

Wedge Trainer Chipping Aid Review: NCG Summary

4.5 star review
NCG SUMMARY

The Wedge Trainer is ideal for the golfer trying to gain more consistency in strike whilst chipping. The device helps eliminate the use of your hands and wrists to get you to use your body more, which is essential for chipping.

If your looking to remove the fats and thins from your chipping game this could be a great training aid for you.

PROS

  • Creates a more consistent strike whilst chipping
  • Encourages body rotation
  • Easy to secure to your club

CONS

  • In the more expensive price range

Wedge Trainer Chipping Aid Review: First Impressions

The Wedge Trainer comes in very neat packaging that includes a pouch for storing and travelling with your wedge trainer. The metal shaft part of the aid feels very sturdy as well as the clasp that attaches to your golf club and is compact enough to fit comfortably into your golf bag. It is available in three different sizes small, medium and large as well as left and right-handed golfers.

With testimonials from Colin Montgomerie and Ian Woosnam, I had to try this new training aid out.

Wedge Trainer: NCG Verdict

I decided to use my 54-degree wedge to test out the Wedge Trainer, as it is probably the club I use the most around the greens. I found the Wedge Trainer easy to attach and secure to my golf club. The only thing I would mention is that you have to be precise to make sure the Wedge Trainer is parallel to your club face. However, If you want to practice more high, open-face shots you can adjust the Wedge Trainer around the grip, and I liked this adaptability.

The Wedge Trainer is designed to restrict your wrist and arm movement and encourage more body rotation to create a more shallow, consistent strike. The use of your body can help to stop thinning the ball or digging your club into the ground. It does take a few shots to get used to the restriction of your dominant arm if you are a player that uses your wrists to hit wedge shots, but with some patience, you will see some good results.

Even the top players on tour struggle to strike chips sometimes and despite playing for 16 years to a high level, I do struggle with particular chip shots, especially off-tight lies. Whilst using the Wedge Trainer, I did not miss one strike. After some practice, I decided to remove the training aid and was very impressed with how well it engrains the correct movement into your chipping swing.

Wedge Trainer Chipping Aid Review

The Wedge Trainer retails for £89 which is on the higher end of the price range when it comes to training aids. However, this product is made in the UK to a very high quality and could be the real difference in your chipping game.
