Volvik has a history of producing bright coloured golf balls, but can that translate into premium performance. Find out here.

When you think of Volvik golf balls, you think colour and a striking design. The Vivid Combi definitely follows this pattern. For a market that is dominated by plain white golf balls, this is something a little left field.

But does this colourful concept translate into real on-course performance, or is it more style than substance? We put the Vivid Combi to the test to find out.

Volvik Vivid Combi Golf Ball Review: NCG Summary

4 star review
NCG SUMMARY

Volvik deserves credit for their innovative two-tone finish and solid distance performance. However, its firm feel and low wedge spin limit its effectiveness around the greens.

PROS

  • Strong distance and ball speed off the driver
  • Durable cover
  • Fun colour options

CONS

  • Very firm feel off the putter and wedges
  • Low wedge spin

First Impressions

In typical Volvik fashion they have employed a design that is instantly recognisable and is a little bit out there as far as golf ball designs go. A little bit of colour in your golf bag has never hurt anyone and these Volvik Vivid Combi golf balls certainly supply that.

The two-tone split also has a practical intent. It can act as a built-in alignment tool on the tee or, more conventionally, on the greens. For some players, that alone might justify giving it a try.

NCG Review

I think it is only right to get the performance negatives out the way first. As far as feel and short game performance goes, this is where the Volvik Vivid Combi golf ball struggles most. It feels very firm generally across the board and off the putter and wedge face in particular.

The matte coating may add durability, but I thought it also contributed to a sensation that, for me, was quite different from a traditional urethane or ionomer-covered ball.

The data backed up the concerns I was feeling. The spin numbers were far too low with the average being at around 5,000 rpm. The high launch and low spin I was getting was the opposite of what I ideally wanted.

Unfortunately, it was more of the same on the greens. It felt to firm and somewhat clicky whilst offering very little feedback.

Don’t worry it’s not all doom and gloom. The performance with the irons was a little better. I was able to produce a 119 mph ball speed, 6,500 rpm spin, and a 162-yard carry with a seven iron. These are fairly respectable numbers for a golf ball of this calibre and price.

But it was with the driver in hand in which I found the Volvik Vivid Combi to shine the brightest. I found it to be a competent option for those looking for a golf ball that produces long distances and a strong ball flight. If that is your priority then you should really consider this as an option.

Overall, I do think Volvik deserve some credit for their innovation. The two-tone finish is clever, and the ball’s distance performance is genuinely solid. But golf balls live and die around the greens, and the Combi’s firm feel and low wedge spin ultimately cap its potential.

Callaway Epic Max driver review
Jack Backhouse

A member of the PGA for 13 years, Jack has lived golf for more than half his life. Inspired by Tiger Wood’s winning putt at the 2008 US Open, an obsession began with watching slow motion golf swings on the internet and reading What’s In The Bag articles in magazines.

Not destined for a life behind the desk in a pro shop, Jack has focussed more on coaching, working closely with regional teams in North Yorkshire and helping golfers of all levels on their journey to enjoying playing the game more. Jack has coached many junior golfers into the county teams, and once worked with a player at the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie.

After letting his game fall apart prior to COVID, Jack rediscovered his love for playing golf after joining Silloth Golf Club in 2020 and whipping round the windy, firm links course. Playing regularly with a half set of clubs he has a passion for shot making and developing skill, and claims to have the sharpest 30-100 yard game in the North of England (only because he doesn’t know anyone in the South), and now maintains a +1 handicap at a club much closer to home, Sand Moor GC.

Jack has always tinkered with his equipment, once building his own Frankenstein one length set of clubs after watching Bryson DeChambeau burst onto the scene after winning the US Amateur. He firmly believes in getting custom fit and is happy to debate anyone about blade irons being superior to any other iron category.

Jack loves: playing quickly, 2 ball golf, match play, heathland courses, pencil bags, foursomes, Tiger Wood’s swing 2005-2009.

Jack hates: buggies, unnecessary trees, giving shots, the 7 iron loft debate, graphite shaft lovers weird superiority complex.
