Jason Day rocked an unfamiliar look in pro golf and its one that has people divided…

Jason Day has certainly made a splash with his choice of apparel over the last year. His choice of Malbon gear has certainly caught the attention of some of the golf world online, and not for the first time either – this time with some Malbon golf joggers that he showcased in a practice round at The Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

The Australian became the first PGA Tour player to become an ambassador of the trendy golf wear brand, Malbon. He signed a one-year deal in January 2024 and looks set to wear the brand again this season. Ever since, the pair have put the golfing community on notice with outlandish and at times controversial wardrobe choices.

Discontent that often springs to mind goes back to the Masters in 2024. Day was asked to remove a sweater vest which had a Malbon Golf Championship emblazoned in large letters across the front.

At the 2025 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Day made headlines again with what looked to be a full suit of jumper and sweatpants. Quite the look.

Jason Day’s Malbon Joggers

The latest evolution of golf clothing has seen the 2015 PGA Championship winner don a pair of joggers – sweatpants – for a practice round. A move that has brought plenty of discourse online from those in favour and those who’d turn their nose up at such a thing.

This may be the most extreme departure away from traditional golf trousers but it’s not the first. Players such as Erik Van Rooyen, Justin Thomas and Phil Mickelson have been seen wearing jogger-styled trousers on the PGA Tour over the last few years.

Plenty of brands have them available to buy online and in retailers. From sportswear brands such as Under Armour to lifestyle brands like Original Penguin. Even Tiger Woods’s Sun Day Red brand has a selection of joggers for golfers to choose from.

This doesn’t mean to say it’s a bad thing for golf, nor is the venture into more casual wear on the course. One could argue that a barrier to the sport for a lot of people is the strictness of a dress code.

A more informal and sporty look could garner momentum in people taking an interest in golf. For those who like a more casual look on the golf course, check out the whole of the Malbon offering here.

Joggers could be the cornerstone of this approach. Although, many would put forth the point of respecting the traditions and having the security of a dress code to follow.

Either way this is yet another sign of how much the golf clothing landscape has changed. See below some of the most popular golf joggers currently available.

Other controversial looks

There was a time when golf hoodies were the only thing the golf world could talk about. Back when Tyrrell Hatton won the BMW PGA Championship in 2020. Now, most people have come to terms with hoodies being worn on the golf course.

I personally have never had a problem with a hooded jumper on the golf course, in fact the opposite. I regularly wear one for both for casual rounds and in club competitions, as I’m sure many of you do.

This is one of many occasions where a controversial clothing trend has now become a staple feature on golf courses. Even GOATs, greatest of all time, aren’t immune from fashion controversy. Tiger Woods’ sported a round neck shirt for the first time in 2003 which sparked much debate.

A look that has now become synonymous with the 15-time major champion and is a shirt that is favoured by many golfers. It’s comfortability and greater freedom of swing appeal to a lot of players who are looking to rep a clean look.

The list of fashion quirks that have now become a norm goes on and just keeps growing. A list that includes trainer-styled shoes, bucket hats and trainer socks to name a few more.

Whilst some seem to have embraced the modernisation of their on-course look, others have been left to wonder if the traditions of golf apparel are being lost.

Should it be a free-for all when it comes to suitable wear on golf courses or do traditions need to be respected? Let us know which side of the fence you sit on by heading over to X.

About the author

Max Mcvittie

A bit of a late bloomer to the game of golf, Max fell in love with the sport when he attended Saturday coaching sessions down at his local golf club after being inspired by friends and family members.

Max has remained a member of Eden Golf Club in Carlisle for a number of years now as he looks to get his handicap down into single figures. Most of his golfing career has been spent battling a permanent slice off the tee, which has led to some ugly rounds.

Having studied at the University of Sunderland, Max is starting out his dream career in sports journalism. During his time at university, he picked up valuable work experience at Reach PLC, BBC Radio Cumbria and GiveMeSport, whilst also getting work published in the Teesside Live. He also spent time working at a local weekly newspaper, Eskdale and Liddesdale Advertiser, as a general news reporter partially covering some local sport just north of the border in Langholm.

Max has just started his journey with the NCG working as the assistant equipment editor. He looks forwarded to reviewing the latest golf equipment, taking up an interest in reviews when buying his first golf club, a Cleveland RTX wedge.

With his bag not going under too many changes throughout the last few years, Max carries an M3 driver, Titleist GT3 Fairway Wood, M2 hybrid, a set of M2 irons, Callaway Jaws wedges and a TaylorMade Spider putter. And yes, Max is a bit of a self-proclaimed TaylorMade fan boy.
