Introduction

When you are looking for your next shoe, I would guess that TravisMathew (TM) would not be a brand that would be at the front of your mind. I suggest that would be a mistake because TM, and its predecessor (Cuater) have been quietly producing excellent shoes for a number of years. And all the pairs I have tested still form part of my shoe ‘wardrobe’, which attests to the quality and practicality of this particular brand.

Here we test the new for TravisMathew Nuage Mega golf shoe for 2026, which has already achieved tour validation courtesy of Callaway staffer, Akshay Bhatia.

Key benefits and downsides

Key benefitsDownsides
Performance – The construction of the shoe provides excellent support and grip, allied to class-leading comfort.Looks – Not for all.
Weight– 410 gms for a spiked shoe is reasonable.
Looks– a clean and modern look.

First Impressions

TravisMathew states that this shoe is ‘the upgrade you didn’t know you needed’, which I rather liked. I should also confirm that the pronunciation for this upgrade is ‘New Age’ rather than ‘Nwarge’. Now we’ve got that out of the way, let’s have a look at the shoe. It is very much a premium sneaker/trainer style. There is a multi-layered performance synthetic upper, which looks smart and stylish. It is also waterproof.

I liked the heel-lock insert at the back collar. The TPU outsole houses seven Softspikes as well as numerous ridges to enhance traction. There is a standard lace closure. If I was a being picky ( well, that’s my job), I’d have preferred slightly thicker laces, but everything worked fine.

The Nuage Mega runs true to size. One thing I noticed, which seems to be a feature across a number of manufacturers (including FootJoy) is that the toe box is more generously proportioned. I think this may be following the running shoe trend of allowing the toes to splay a little more. As long as the design allows the foot to remain stable in the shoe, then, for me, this is a good thing.

This shoe comes in 3 colours in the UK (5 in the USA). I tested the version in ‘Classic white/Black’ which was predominately white with some black trim. It worked well for the style of the shoe, although it wouldn’t be great as an all year round choice in the UK.

How I undertook the review

I undertook the review by wearing these golf shoes over half a dozen rounds at my home heathland course, Alwoodley, in Yorkshire. Testing occurred during a mini-heatwave in generally dry and springy conditions. I also took them up to the Highlands of Scotland where we had some inclement weather. So I have been able to assess all key features.

What I found

The first thing to say is that these shoes are supremely comfortable. I cannot recall testing a more comfortable spiked shoe. The fit was perfect for me and I did like the slightly wider toe box. I played golf on five consecutive days in the Nuage Mega without a hint of discomfort or rubbing.

The shoe was stable, offering strong torsional rigidity, and my heel felt securely locked in place. The typical grip tests for shoes (fairway bunkers and uneven lies) were handled with ease.

The weather conditions were predominantly dry and warm. I found that my feet remained comfortable with no moisture buildup that can occur with synthetic materials. More to the point, we played a few holes at Royal Dornoch is extremely heavy rain , and my feet remained bone-dry.

Although it is difficult to provide reliable comments regarding durability, I can say that the four Cuater/TravisMathew shoes I have reviewed over the years are all still in my wardrobe and are showing no signs of wear or deterioration. Of course, you do need to look after your golf equipment properly. In the case of synthetic uppers (as opposed to genuine leather), soap/water, a soft cloth and maybe a soft brush is all you need to keep these shoes in good condition.

NCG Final Say

These are a first-rate pair of shoes if you are comfortable with the sneaker/trainer look. They offer strong performance, look good and are extremely comfortable. They get a well-earned 5-star review!
