Designed to launch higher and fly further, this is a hybrid that could become a staple of your golf bag

Cobra’s OPTM range has already made a strong early impression, particularly in the driver category. As a rule of thumb, I have always find Cobra hybrids to be long and to be easy to use.

So, it was interesting to learn that Cobra has shifted their intentions away from changing bigger distances and greater ball speeds to delivering better playability and enhanced forgiveness.

Historically, Cobra hybrids have always been hot of the face but the OPTM model looks to add a bit more stability to its repertoire.

A hybrid that can combine speed and forgiveness is an appealing proposition, but has Cobra achieved this? Find out in our full review of the Cobra OPTM hybrid below…

NCG SUMMARY

The Cobra OPTM Hybrid is a powerful and forgiving long-game option that combines high ball speeds with a confidence inspiring look. Despite being a more playable and forgiving hybrid the distances are still really strong.

There is a noticeable draw bias, which will help many golfers but will be slightly counter productive for those who already miss left.

PROS

  • Excellent balls speeds and distances for a hybrid
  • Easy to launch
  • Plenty of forgiveness across the entire face

CONS

  • Draw bias won’t suit all

First Impressions

Cobra has built a strong reputation for producing modern, premium looking equipment and the OPTM hybrid shows that they have no intention of ending that anytime soon.

The head is slightly bigger than what I remember past Cobra hybrids to be and is a little too enlarged for my liking. But saying that, it isn’t overly large to the point that it is obstructive or counter productive in any way.

It looks good behind the ball and the shaping is clean. The Cobra logo is a useful alignment aid and the matte black finish just reinforces that premium look.

NCG Review

Although, I did start this review off by stating Cobra’s shift in priorities for this hybrid away from pure speed, this still produces quick club head speeds.

I was able to generate an average ball speed of 140 miles per hour, with a peak of 144 miles per hour. These are three-wood figures, quite mind blowing really.

The average carry distance was 224 yards, with total distance reaching as far as 240 yards on my better strikes. Again, these are impressive numbers for a hybrid and shows how strong Cobra clubs are once more in this department.

Whenever I game a hybrid I find it usually has a tendency to lean out to the left. The Cobra OPTM is no different, in part thanks to the heel biased weighting that encourages a slight draw.

This will be effective for those who struggle with a slice, but for those who already favour a draw it might be a little much and could produce some wayward strikes.

Cobra OPTM Hybrid

Being marketed as a more playable hybrid, I was intrigued to see how easy this club was to launch. In truth, the deeper centre of gravity and increased MOI make the OPTM Hybrid easy to launch.

Even on slight mishits I was able to till produce respectable distances and plenty of spin.

NCG Verdict

Cobra has done a solid job with the OPTM hybrid. Its easy to launch and the ball climbs well once it has left the club face, whilst still producing impressive ball speeds and strong distances.

The only slight discretion I have with it is that it is a little too draw biased for me. But, if you are someone who is a little more inconsistent with your ball striking this won’t be a problem whatsoever.

Callaway Epic Max driver review
Jack Backhouse

A member of the PGA for 13 years, Jack has lived golf for more than half his life. Inspired by Tiger Wood’s winning putt at the 2008 US Open, an obsession began with watching slow motion golf swings on the internet and reading What’s In The Bag articles in magazines.

Not destined for a life behind the desk in a pro shop, Jack has focussed more on coaching, working closely with regional teams in North Yorkshire and helping golfers of all levels on their journey to enjoying playing the game more. Jack has coached many junior golfers into the county teams, and once worked with a player at the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie.

After letting his game fall apart prior to COVID, Jack rediscovered his love for playing golf after joining Silloth Golf Club in 2020 and whipping round the windy, firm links course. Playing regularly with a half set of clubs he has a passion for shot making and developing skill, and claims to have the sharpest 30-100 yard game in the North of England (only because he doesn’t know anyone in the South), and now maintains a +1 handicap at a club much closer to home, Sand Moor GC.

Jack has always tinkered with his equipment, once building his own Frankenstein one length set of clubs after watching Bryson DeChambeau burst onto the scene after winning the US Amateur. He firmly believes in getting custom fit and is happy to debate anyone about blade irons being superior to any other iron category.

Jack loves: playing quickly, 2 ball golf, match play, heathland courses, pencil bags, foursomes, Tiger Wood’s swing 2005-2009.

Jack hates: buggies, unnecessary trees, giving shots, the 7 iron loft debate, graphite shaft lovers weird superiority complex.
