L.A.B Golf Putter Claims Maiden Major – it won’t be the last!

Oakmont was always going to crown a worthy winner of the US Open, JJ Spaun was certainly that. But was there a new king of the greens crowned as well…

It was a putt that will be remembered and talked about for years to come. Possibly the greatest major winning putt of all time. And it was a L.A.B golf putter that helped J.J. Spaun achieve a life long dream.

By now you have probably seen the monster putt on the 18th green at Oakmont Country Golf Club that secured J.J. Spaun his maiden major victory. I have certainly watched it more times than I care to remember. The 65-footer for birdie encapsulated what was a truly spectacular final round of golf at this year’s US Open.

But, it wasn’t just a first major win for the American. It was also the first men’s major to be won using a L.A.B putter. For those golf equipment nerds amongst us especially, this is quite a seismic event.

L.A.B putters have attracted a fair amount of attention over the last few years. This aligns with the ever increasing popularity of zero torque putters amongst a range of golfers, a trend that doesn’t look to be slowing down any time soon.

Fundamentally, these Lie Angle Balanced putters are designed to naturally stay square at impact. They work with the arc of a golfers stroke by twisting open or shut during the swing to provide more stability. These benefits have helped to garner a strong following amongst club and professional golfers.

The company itself has been making putters for less than a decade and have now reached the summit of the sport. There was a time when it seemed Tour players were perhaps once reluctant to give them a go, now it won’t take you very long to spot one on the greens at a professional tournament on TV.

The likes of Brian Harman, Will Zalatoris and Adam Scott, who was also in contention at Oakmont, have used a L.A.B putter. The Australian also helped with the half-moon mallet design of the L.A.B OZ.1 putter. A putter which our PGA Professional, Jack Backhouse, loved when he took it out on the greens.

Over on LIV Golf, six-time major winner Phil Mickelson has utilised the Mezz Max at times in rotation with his trusted Odyssey offerings.

However, they aren’t the perfect match for all golfers. Some may find their unconventional shaping and oversized club head too much of a drastic change from more traditional putters. That’s understandable.

But, here at NCG we think that for the majority of club golfers their benefits are just too good to turn down. Having put a number of their offerings through their paces, we can confidently say they are worth the investment.

Oh, and as far as majors and other honours go, this is most definitely just the start. All eras in golf are defined by different golf clubs. The Callaway Big Bertha helped revolutionised drivers and metal woods, Mizuno’s MP-33 are considered some of the best irons of all time, but now it seems we are entering the age of the L.A.B putter.

Get used to them, because we’ll be seeing a whole lot more of L.A.B putters over the next few years.
