Schloss Roxburghe: Brilliance in the Borders

Fancy a stop in the Scottish Borders… We’ve got just the right resort for you…

Schloss Roxburghe 14th Kelso, Borders

Whether you’re basing yourself in the Borders, or you fancy a stop on the long drive north, the Schloss Roxburghe is the perfect place for you!

Located just outside the town of Kelso in the Scottish Borders, the Schloss Roxburghe can be used as a gateway to Scotland. That was exactly my use for it, on the way up to Aberdeenshire to run some NCG Top 100s Tour events!

It is somewhat in the middle of nowhere, accessible by the back roads of the region, but the border with England sits just ten miles away from the venue. Edinburgh is around 50 miles to the north by road, with Newcastle just shy of 70 miles south.

However, when you drive through the gate, and you can see the castle in the distance, you know you are driving into somewhere special. From a short stay, you can understand why it ranks highly on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Resorts list…

Schloss Roxburghe 17th green

The Championship-standard golf course

Unlike a lot of golf resorts you will find around Great Britain, and indeed Europe, the Schloss Roxburghe only plays to 18 holes. However, that layout, designed by Dave Thomas and runs alongside the River Teviot at times, has championship pedigree.

The former Ryder Cup man did a wonderful job at Roxburghe, using the natural contours for wide fairways and undulating greens. Some of which were much too difficult for me to get to grips with, but the surfaces are pure and the turf is crisp – exactly what you’re looking for when it comes to a great golf course!

The course has been the host venue of the Scottish Seniors Open during its short history. The event, held on the European Legends Tour, was hosted by the Schloss Roxburghe in the early 2000s, with the likes of Terry Gale and David Oakley being victorious.

The signature hole at Schloss Roxburghe is the par 5 14th hole, which runs alongside the River Teviot. From the elevated tee shot on this 575-yard hole, the famous Roxburghe Viaduct is in view. The par 3 15th also has the viaduct overlooking it, while two bunkers short of the green are there to catch any mis-hit shots on this 175-yard par 3.

Add in the fact that the golf course has a new back tee built on the 2nd (which extends the hole by some 60 yards), and there are plans in place for more extensions, could we possibly see the DP World Tour make the move here at some point in the future?

The glorious accommodation and amenities

When it comes to accommodation, the Schloss Roxburghe covers pretty much all bases.

From those who are just staying for a night or two, there are plenty of rooms in the beautiful hotel building, housed inside the manor house on site.

There are also a number of rooms in the Estate House, which is a relatively new addition to the site. For families who are staying for a week, there are a range of cottages available on the far side of the resort, and I had the pleasure of actually staying in one of those for the night during my short stay in the Borders.

The cottages range from one to two bedrooms, and all come with their own living area and kitchen, so they can really be made into a home away from home. Some even have their own private saunas, just for extra special touch.

A number of the cottages back on to the glorious golf course, giving views of the layout from your own living room, and they all come with patios and outdoor seating to enjoy the sunsets as well.

Away from the accommodation there is plenty to do. There is a spa for the adults, while there are also lawn games, including archery and croquet for the kids to play.

The manor house also features the restaurant, bar and lounge areas, each of which has a lovely vibe to it. There is also fine dining available at the Schloss Roxburghe, both for those staying at the resort, and those just visiting for the evening.

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
