La Cala Resort: A Costa del Sol Golfing Paradise
La Cala Resort, cradled in the sun-drenched Sierra de Mijas on Spain’s Costa del Sol, is a golfer’s dream destination, boasting three championship courses—Campo America, Campo Asia, and Campo Europa—designed by Cabell B. Robinson. Just 30 minutes from Málaga Airport and 20 minutes from Marbella, this sprawling resort blends world-class golf, stunning Andalusian scenery, and top-tier amenities.
I visited in December 2024, where I played all three courses, made use of the Spa, Gym, 2 restaurants, tennis courts and can more than happily say this is perfect destination for any golf enthusiast.
Each of La Cala’s courses offers a distinct personality, ensuring variety and excitement.
Campo America with its wide fairways and fewer bunkers, is the most forgiving off the tee but demands precision on small, elevated greens.
Campo Asia, the tightest and most bunkered, is a strategic test requiring pinpoint accuracy.
Campo Europa, defined by the River Ojén crossing eight holes, balances accessibility with water-laden drama. Together, they form a trio consistently ranked among Spain’s top courses.
Playing all three over a few days was a masterclass in course design and variety.
The resort’s condition at the end of 2024 was exceptional. Fairways across all courses were lush, firm, and tightly mown, offering ideal lies and encouraging of great ball striking. The greens, fast and true and often really made you think about not embarrassing yourself on the slopes.
As a destination for a golf break, it doesn’t get much better. There is a driving range and a 6-hole short course, which unfortunately was being renovated during our stay, but would be a great place to hone your skills before or after a round of golf.
Scenically, La Cala is unrivaled, with each course weaving through the rugged Andalusian landscape. I have never played at a golf course up in the hills before and the morning and evening shadowy mountains could easily distract you from the golf.

The 4 Star hotel offers multiple dining options, a gym, a pool, tennis courts and more all on site. The resort is placed well up into the hills and you never feel like you need to leave to seek further entertainment. The relaxed feel in the clubhouse restaurant is a perfect place to have a beer and enjoy some food after a memorable round of golf.
I stayed in a room with a large balcony overlooking the golf courses and what an amazing view it was to wake up to every morning. There was a big room renovation happening during our stay there so the quality of the resort is only moving in one direction, and that’s up.
Getting to use the spa was a real treat during the stay. The multiple saunas and steam rooms were incredibly spacious, clean and relaxing, and it was very easy to lose track of time in there. The staff were extremely polite and helpful and I would consider tagging on an extra day at La Cala after the golf has finished to recooperate with some treatments to go home feeling refreshed.
In conclusion, La Cala Resort is a Costa del Sol gem, delivering a golfing experience that rivals Europe’s best. Its pristine courses, strategic depth, and luxurious facilities make it ideal for a golfing getaway. Whether tackling America’s vistas, Asia’s precision, or Europa’s drama, you’re in for a treat. Visit www.lacala.com for bookings and details— I cannot believe there are many other better resorts to go to in Europe that do a better job than La Cala.
