Salobre Golf Resort review

Played by NCG: Salobre (Old)

NCG's Alex Perry was on a family holiday at the Sheraton Gran Canaria - so it would be rude not to try the golf courses

Reason for a Salobre Golf Resort review

I was staying at the resort with my girlfriend and our baby daughter for a few days – and it would be rude not to try out the golf courses. I started with the Old course then onto the New course the following day.

Where is Salobre Golf Resort?

The resort a couple of miles inland from the southernmost point of Gran Canaria in Spain, about a four-and-a-half hour flight from the UK.

What to expect

Don’t let the name fool you, the Old course was built in 1999. It’s a pleasant parkland that meanders its way through the natural environment. Every tee box offers different levels, with wide fairways and small greens to test players of all abilities. Don’t take this course lightly, it’s hosted some big events, including the Spanish PGA, Senior and Women’s Championships.

Favourite hole

The par-3 holes on the Old are a pure joy, especially the spectacular 11th, where you fire from a tee box high up on the hillside to a green nestled in a cocoon of rock.

My best bit

The 13th is another wonderful hole. You park your buggy and walk over a lengthy wooden bridge across the lake to reach the tee. Your drive is through a tree-lined corridor – think the 18th at Augusta on a smaller scale – and requires you to carry the water.

A good drive here will set you up for a relatively straight-forward pitch and putt for a three. It’s always a lovely feeling when that birdie putt drops, isn’t it?

What to look for

I love how the course blended in to the natural environment. You won’t be short of photo opportunities here.

When I go back

I was the first player on the tee at 7.15am and I played alone. I whizzed round in two hours and was back in the hotel in time for breakfast.

If I go back, I will make sure I’m enjoying the course with a playing partner and take a bit more time. The course deserves that.
