Reason for an Ormskirk golf club review

If there is any day in the golfing calendar where you want to tee it up it is Open Sunday. We were in Birkdale for the Open and the friendly people at Ormskirk allowed us to have a round at first light before we headed back to Birkdale for the conclusion of the final day.

Where is Ormskirk

Ormskirk is a short drive inland from Southport on the edge of a golfers paradise. Within 10 miles you have Royal Birkdale, Hillside and S&A. A little further down you will come across West Lancs and Hesketh.

What to expect

You can expect a really good test of golf. What I love about the course is the variety of different holes on offer. You never feel like you are playing the same hole twice.

The back nine is certainly stronger than the front but holes 5 through to 9 are particular fun to play.

When you reach the 11th hole you will find yourself in a little part of the course where the next 5 holes  are all cleverly designed to bring the overhanging trees into play. The 14th, a very short par 3, is a hole where you could ruin your card. Make sure you hit the green and don’t go long.

The closing hole with the clubhouse in the background is also one of the courses stand out holes. Leak your drive right and you may find the water, too far left and you could be blocked out.

Favourite hole

There’s an argument to be had for a lot of holes around Ormskirk but the 11th hole ticks all the boxes. A dog leg par 4 right to left means you have to be accurate off the tee. A drive of about 180-200 yards should leave you in prime position to attack the pin which is located about 100 yards down the hill.

The green is surrounded by bunkers which makes the approach slightly more difficult. Despite its short length two accurate shots are needed if you hold any hope of making birdie.

My best bit

Approaching the 17th hole I was 1 down to my colleague. The 17th is a relatively short par 3 with bunkers surrounding it. I pulled an 8 iron way left and seemingly had no shot.

A very nice up and down later and I was still in with a chance going down the last.

What to look for

Some spectacularly framed holes. Who says parkland courses can’t be scenic? Some of the backdrops to the holes, specifically the 3rd, 10th and 11th, are a joy to behold. It makes you want to play golf every day!

When I go back

I’ll make sure I’m not in such a rush to get back to Birkdale for the Open. I’ll give myself plenty of time to enjoy what is a simply beautiful golf course.
