Reason for a Ganton Golf Club review

Myself and a friend had been talking of playing Ganton Golf Club for a while and eventually we made the trip over towards Scarborough.

What to expect?

A test of all aspects of your game particularly off the tee. Go off line by the slightest margin and you will be reloading.

Where is Ganton Golf Club?

Ganton is located around 25 minutes outside of Scarborough. Despite being located just off the A64 it’s relatively easy to miss the turning for the entrance before you head down a country lane towards the clubhouse.

Favourite hole

Ganton Golf Club

I enjoyed the dog-leg 18th. The tee shot is blind despite hitting down hill towards the tight fairway which you need to be careful of because trees line the far side.

Trying to make myself an advantage I hit a low hybrid which found its way into the middle of the fairway. From there you have a great approach shot with a wedge. Your approach is helped by two trees that line the sides of the fairway as you play across the road that leads to the clubhouse to find the green.

My best bit

With wind behind on the 168-yard 10th I hit a wedge to two feet and made a two. With the flag at the front of the green and with the wind behind it wasn’t playing anywhere near its yardage.

The shot was made sweeter as the group in front were waiting at the side of the green to let us through.

What to look for

The clubhouse is filled with golfing memorabilia from when they have hosted the Ryder Cup, Walker Cup and Curtis Cup. There is also memorabilia from Harry Vardon’s playing days as the seven time major champion was the professional at Ganton between 1896 and 1903.

When I go back

I would be more sensible off the tee. On the front nine I wasn’t hitting the ball well off the tee and was getting away with the poor shots until the par four seventh hole. I tried taking it over the corner and completely lost my ball.

On most of the holes at Ganton you are best taking a long iron off the tee and accepting a long approach to the green.
