Following a rebrand and a transformation, the PGA Aroeira Lisboa is better than ever!

PGA Aroeira Lisboa

Already one of the country’s most iconic golf venues, PGA Aroeira Lisboa has moved a step closer to being transformed into one of Portugal’s premier golf destinations following another exciting year of investment.

Twelve months after the 36-hole resort – a two-time host of the Portuguese Open and the only PGA National in Portugal – completed a comprehensive overhaul of PGA Aroeira No.1, its younger sibling has undergone a similar makeover, with Donald Steel’s classic design reopening to widespread acclaim in September.

PGA Aroeira No.2 has reopened following a major four-month refurbishment programme and is the latest upgrade to be unveiled by the resort, with further investment set to include a new clubhouse and the completion of the Aroeira Collections by Missoni real-estate development that is set to reposition PGA Aroeira as the best golf destination south of Lisbon.

Situated 30 minutes from Lisbon in the beautiful Costa Azul region, PGA Aroeira enjoys a rich and glorious past and further good times lie ahead for the resort, which is set among natural pine forest and features two 18-hole championship courses – PGA Aroeira 1, which hosted the Portuguese Open in 1996 and 1997, and PGA Aroeira 2.

The layouts were already good, but significant recent investment overseen by Details – Hospitality, Sports, Leisure – has taken the golfing experience to a new level, with both courses the subject of comprehensive maintenance improvement programmes to enhance course conditioning and the course experience being offered to members and guests.

In addition to significantly improving the golf facilities, further investment will include the launch of a new clubhouse between the two courses and the opening of Aroeira Collections by Missoni, an exclusive residential and tourist project in partnership with the world-renowned Italian fashion house.

At the heart of the ambitious development will be the Aroeira Collections Hotel which, set to open in 2027 and offering 138 one and two-bedroom apartments, will sit in the centre of the resort’s two championship courses and be a major boost for Portuguese tourism and the local economy.

Offering easy access to the many golden sandy beaches of the Costa Azul, PGA Aroeira offers a range of stay and play hotel breaks and accommodation options, with selected partners including the Crowne Plaza Costa da Caparica and Aroeira Lisbon Hotel.

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
