NCG Top 100s Tour Visits…. Prestbury Golf Club

A glorious afternoon at a beautiful northern venue? That’s what our players enjoyed on the NCG Top 100s Tour…

Prestbury Golf CLub

Like a number of the courses you will find on the NCG Top 100s lists, Prestbury is just a few miles from a major city, but you really wouldn’t know it.

Prestbury Golf Club sits 15 miles south of Manchester, and as you drive up the road towards the golf club, with large houses either side, you already know you’re in for a treat when you drive through the gates.

Thanks to its four sets of tees, Prestbury can almost play as multiple courses. The Whites (which is what our competitors had to deal with on the day) take the course back to just over 6,300 yards – which isn’t the longest track in the world. However, the elevation changes make it feel much longer at times. It has a Course Rating of 72.1 – +1.1 compared to the par, showing its difficulty.

Off the Yellows, that Course Rating comes down to 71.1, with the yardage also dropping by over 200 yards. Meanwhile, the Ladies play from the Red tees, and play Prestbury as a Par 72 – the 13th becoming an extra par 5. It plays as a Course Rating of 73.7 for the Ladies, at +1.7 compared to par.

What is the course like and what are the best holes?

With tree-lined fairways, plenty of sand traps and thick rough in places, Prestbury Golf Club will provide a proper test of golf to players of all abilities.

It is the sort of course that you would expect to find in Surrey, minus the heather. The perfectly placed bunkers, rough that can be either thick or wispy depending on which hole you’re on, and the tree-lined fairways make it look like a proper heathland venue. But then, what else would you expect from the great Harry Colt?

The course was designed in 1920 but the Englishman, more than a quarter of a century after his original golf course design – at Rye Golf Club – opened.

The stunning 9th hole winds its way past all the trouble you should now come to expect. There are fairway bunkers on both sides, while the fairways are lined with trees. In true Prestbury form, the green is situated above the player from the fairway, making the appraoch shot to the putting surface that bit more difficult. At 455 yards from the tips and playing as a Par 4, you can understand why the closing hole on the front nine is the Stroke Index 1 at Prestbury.

The 9th hole at Prestbury, which makes its way back up the hill

It is one of many stunning holes on the Cheshire layout, with the quartet of par 3s all throwing up different challenges. On the day, we put our Nearest The Pin prizes on the 7th and 17th, with the former playing at 180 yards, and rising ever so slightly up the hill. Anything short on the 7th has the risk of dropping into a deep gully, one where you might not be able to see the bottom of the flag from if you are playing your second shot from.

The penultimate hole at Prestbury is also an uphill par 3, but a bank that runs around the left and back of the green can provide a backstop, as it did for one of our players. Although he did not take home one of the prizes, he hit his shot long and left, it hit said bank and rolled back down to eight foot! A true member’s bounce if ever we heard one!

The final hole at Prestbury brings you back to the glorious clubhouse building (which you can see below). A tricky par 4 of 400 yards, it makes you hit one more good drive to have any chance of coming away from the 18th with a par, or better…

What did our competitors think of Prestbury Golf Club?

What about the off-course facilities?

Prestbury has plenty of space and facility to allow you to work on your game before taking to the golf course. Behind the 18th and the trees lies the practice area, which includes a driving range and a great short game area to allow for those final touches.

The putting green then sits in front of the clubhouse (as you can see in the picture above) and provides a pristine surface for you to roll some putts in and to gain some confidence ahead of that short walk to the first tee box.

Prestbury Golf Club clubhouse

Inside the clubhouse is beautifully decked out, with the members’ honours boards, and some very comfortable seating. There is a bar area, lounge area and a dining area all in an open-plan layout, with views out to the putting green and the 1st tee.

How can you play Prestbury Golf Club?

Tee times are available every day of the week for visitors at Prestbury Golf Club, apart from on Saturdays, which is the members’ competition day.

You can check out the green fees for a game at Prestbury Golf Club here, and you can book to play at Prestbury using BRS for Visitors here.

Prestbury Golf Club is 15 miles south of Manchester, just outside the town of Macclesfield. It is close by the intersection of the A523 and A537.

We are looking at bringing our golfers back to Prestbury on the NCG Top 100s Tour next year!
