The NCG Top 100s Tour Grand Final took place at a glorious Ryder Cup venue. We took the tour to Ganton Golf Club in Yorkshire.
The course hosted the Ryder Cup in 1949, where Ben Hogan’s United States side won 7-5 to win on foreign soil. Sam Snead, Dai Rees and Fred Daly were among those to play at Ganton that September.
There are four sets of tees at the Yorkshire venue, with the Blues being the longest of those. They push the course back to over 7,000 yards, with nine par 4s playing more than 400 yards. Off the Blues, Ganton plays with a Course Rating of 74.7, almost four shots higher than its par of 71. The Whites (6,778 / 73.6) and Yellows (6,456 / 72.2), the latter being what our competitors played off for the Grand Final, are the other teeing options for the men.
The Reds play from more than 6,000 yards, making it one of the longest courses for ladies in the country. However, it does play as a Par 76, with a Course Rating of 76.8. The 6th, 7th, 11th, 15th and 18th all play as par 5s, while the 13th remains the longest hole on the course for both men and women.

What is the course like and what are the best holes?
Considering it has hosted the Ryder Cup, the Curtis Cup, the Walker Cup, the Amateur Championship and the Brabazon Trophy (among many other prolific tournaments), it is no surprise that Ganton is a high-quality golf course.
The par 71 layout at Ganton is a stunning heathland and tree-lined course, opening with a quartet of par 4s. They are each slightly different, offering different challenges for golfers of all abilities. The 5th is the shortest hole on the course, playing just 150 yards from the Yellows. It played as the first of our two Nearest The Pin prizes on the day, with the 10th being the other.

The closing stretch offers up some incredible holes, beginning with the par 4 15th. Playing with the entrance road to the club down its right, trees and mounds down its left, and the green in the distance, it is a hole that requires driving accuracy for sure. Find the fairway and you still won’t have a flat lie, as the surface undulates throughout the hole. Come away with a par, and the hardest part is still yet to come…
The signature hole on the property is the lengthy par 3 16th. It plays almost 250 yards from the back tees, to a small green, and with sandscapes seemingly everywhere you look. Even off the Yellows, a long iron or fairway wood will be required for most, and most will certainly take a bogey as they look to finish their round with as few mistakes as possible.

“Even despite all the rain, the course played magnificently. It is always great fun to play at Ganton” – Richard Noland
“We were glad we made the trip down for Scotland for the day, because we thoroughly enjoyed it, as we have at all the events we have played this year.” – Alan Smith
“A great event to end a great year. The rain came down for the last hour but it didn’t dampen the spirits – even if the golf wasn’t great!” – Mike Duckworth

What about the off-course facilities?
Away from the golf course, Ganton has some wonderful facilities for players to practice with. On the far side of the clubhouse sits the driving range, which plays off all grass tees. Tokens are available in the pro shop for the driving range.
There is also a short game area to the side of the range, which features a green with five or six flags to aim for, along with a pair of bunkers. There is an 18-hole putting green in front of the clubhouse, and next to the 1st tee, allowing a large number of players to practice on the dance floor before taking to the course.

The clubhouse, as you can see in the photo below, is a beautiful building, and one that has several rooms to please all types of clientele. There are several different bar areas, including a dining room which requires jacket and tie. Locker rooms, including showers and toilets, are also available, while the pro shop is fully stocked with gear from all the major brands.
