Ryder Cup: Everything you need to know about the Ryder Cup at Marco Simone

Take a look at our complete guide to the Ryder Cup, which takes place in Italy for the first time this year

The Ryder Cup will take place on Italian soil for the first time in 2023, with the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club playing host.

This year’s event will take place the week after the Solheim Cup in Spain, bringing an end to a fortnight of incredible team golf.

Team USA will be the defending champions after their record-breaking 19-9 victory at the Whistling Straits two years ago.

The first Ryder Cup was held in 1927, but back then, it was Great Britain taking on the United States. That became Great Britain & Ireland in the 1950s, before becoming Continental Europe for the first time in 1979.

Since the competition changed to Europe against the USA, the series score stands at 11-9-1 in Team Europe’s favour.

This year, Luke Donald and Zach Johnson will lead their respective teams into battle. Both men have had individual success, along with being a part of multiple winning teams in this competition.

Donald has a 100% record in the event, winning with Team Europe in all four of his appearances as a player. Johnson is a two-time major champion and has five appearances in this competition, helping Team USA to victory in 2016 at Hazeltine.

This year’s edition promises to be a great contest between the two teams, with Marco Simone set to play host.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the odds for the Ryder Cup?

The odds are very close with just a few weeks to go. With William Hill, Team USA are the odds-on favourites to lift the trophy again. They are 4/6, while Team Europe are currently 6/4 to take victory. The draw, a final score of 14-14 come the Sunday evening, is currently 12/1.

When and where will the Ryder Cup take place?

The 2023 Ryder Cup will be held from September 29 to October 2 at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club. It will be the first time the competition has been held on Italian soil.

How can I get tickets for the Ryder Cup?

You can get tickets to go to Marco Simone here. General admission tickets for the weekend are sold out, but packages are still available for the week’s action in Rome.

Who won the last Ryder Cup?

Team USA are the defending champions. They dominated Team Europe two years ago at Whistling Straits, winning by a record margin. Their 19-9 win was helped by Dustin Johnson, who went a perfect 5-0-0.

Who are the captains for this year’s Ryder Cup?

Zach Johnson will be at the helm of Team USA this year. Johnson won the Masters Tournament in 2007, before securing his second major at the Open Championship in 2015. He has played five times, and was part of the victorious American side in 2016.

Team Europe captain Luke Donald is a former World No.1 and is a two-time winner of the BMW PGA Championship, the DP World Tour’s flagship event. Donald has a perfect record in the event, having been on the winning side in all four of his appearances.

How can I watch the Ryder Cup?

The Ryder Cup will be broadcast live around the world by various broadcast partners.

How does the selection process work?

Team Europe and Team USA have slightly differing qualification processes for players to get into their respective teams, both with six players earning automatic qualification.

The top six players on the US Ryder Cup standings receive automatic qualification into the team. Captain Zach Johnson will then pick six more players to make up his team of 12 to travel to Rome with.

The European team will also feature six automatic qualifiers. Three of those will come from the European Points list, with points earned at DP World Tour events. The other three come from the World Points list, with points earned around the world, mainly on the PGA Tour. Captain Luke Donald will then pick the other six members of the team.

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
