Just a short flight from Europe’s major cities and a mere 30-minute drive from Málaga Airport, La Cala Resort continues to set the benchmark for luxury golf and leisure living on Spain’s sun-drenched Costa del Sol.

Nestled between the cultural richness of Málaga and the elegance of Marbella, the resort, proudly owned by FBD Hotels & Resorts, offers an irresistible blend of championship golf, Andalusian charm and a flourishing residential community drawn to its lifestyle appeal.

La Cala is celebrating its nomination as Spain’s Best Golf Hotel 2025 and launching a public campaign to secure the coveted title at this year’s World Golf Awards.

La Cala

“This nomination is a testament to the dedication and passion of our entire team,” said Sean Corte-Real, General Manager of La Cala Resort. “We’re incredibly proud to be recognised on the international stage and now we’re asking our guests, golf community and partners to help us bring this award home.”

“These renovations are about more than aesthetics,” Corte-Real added. “They’re about elevating the guest experience in every sense from the moment you wake up to the moment you return from the 18th hole.”

Its stylish four-star hotel is at the heart of the resort, recently refurbished to reflect a fresh, contemporary interpretation of Andalusian design. The renovated guest rooms combine elegant interiors with thoughtful details from premium bedding and spacious terraces to integrated smart technology and luxury amenities. Rooms offer panoramic views over the golf courses and surrounding mountains, creating a sense of calm and connection to the natural landscape.

Dining continues to be a central part of the La Cala experience, with exciting developments across its culinary offering. Currently, the resort’s two outdoor dining venues, El Patio (Mediterranean cuisine and tapas) and the Steakhouse (charcoal-grilled meats) are showcasing new concepts and updated menus, offering guests the perfect al fresco experience. La Terraza remains a favourite for breakfast and lunch service. At the same time, this summer sees the introduction of themed evening events, including a Seafood BBQ every Tuesday, Paella Night each Sunday, and an Asian-themed experience on the final Friday of every month.

Golf remains at the very core of La Cala’s identity. The resort is home to three championship courses, a world-class academy, and a fully remodelled par-3 course at the newly revamped Golf Hub. This enhanced short course has been expanded to 9 holes, taking La Cala’s total offering to an impressive 63 holes of golf, the most extensive offering in Spain. It provides a dynamic new option for players looking to refine their short game or enjoy a faster-paced round.

Beyond golf, guests can unwind at the full-service spa, which features a hydrotherapy circuit, treatment rooms, and wellness programmes tailored to relaxation and recovery. The fitness centre, padel courts, and outdoor trails provide a comprehensive lifestyle offering that supports active and restorative escapes.

With 63 holes of golf, a world-renowned academy, and a suite of upgraded hotel, dining and wellness facilities, La Cala delivers an experience that blends sporting excellence with authentic Mediterranean hospitality. This nomination recognises not just the quality of the resort’s golf, but the depth of its guest experience from check-in to the final putt. As the resort continues to raise the bar for luxury golf travel in Spain, now is the time to show your support.

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
