Bull Bay: Panoramic views and proper links golf

Why we’d rather be playing the most northerly golf course in Wales

If you’re a fan of panoramic views and proper links golf, then Bull Bay Golf Club, located on the island of Anglesey in Wales, is the place for you.

The course has the moniker of being the most northerly golfing layout in Wales, and offers all those who play it glorious views out to the Irish Sea and across the water to the Lake District.

A relatively short course, at 6,100 yards, this Herbert Fowler design will not be easy. A traditional links course with gorse in view, the sea in play, and plenty of blind shots, it is a course you will want to play at least twice to get the hang of it…

History

Having officially opened in August of 1913, shortly prior to the beginning of the First World War, Bull Bay Golf Club is one of the oldest golfing venues in Wales.

The great Herbert Fowler – he of Walton Heath fame – designed the layout. JH Taylor and James Braid, both five-time winners of the Open Championship, played a match at Bull Bay to celebrate the opening of the course.

Over the years, the seaside layout has played host to many national events, including the Welsh Boys Championship and the North Wales Championship.

What makes Bull Bay Golf Club special?

Firstly, its location. Bull Bay is the most northerly course in Wales, and few can rival the spectacular setting of the 18-hole championship course.

The layout offers panoramic views of the Irish Sea, over towards the Isle of Man and even the distant hills of the Lake District on a clear day. Look inland, and you’ve got the mountains of Snowdonia in view.

The club motto is “Her Deg ar Hen Dir” – meaning an honest challenge on ancient land, and Fowler’s design means there are several blind shots that will cause golfers of all abilities trouble.

Where does it rank?

11th in Wales, 2nd in North Wales

Where is it?

Bull Bay Golf Club is the most northerly golf course in Wales. It is situated at the northern peak of the isle of Anglesey, which is in the northwest corner of the nation. It is between Burwen and Amlwch, and only a short walk from the coast. It is just off the A5025, the main road around the north of Anglesey.
