Is this one of Europe’s toughest courses? James Savage heads to Sweden with plenty of golf balls to find out

Reason for a Bro Hof Slott review?

A Motocaddy press trip where we were testing out the brand new S5 Connect trolley.

Where is Bro Hof Slott?

Bro Hof Slott is located about an hour north west of Stockholm.

The Stadium Course at Bro Hoff Slott, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, has played host to the European Tour’s Nordea Masters – including Lee Westwood’s win in 2012.

You can travel via water between Stockholm and Bro Hof which also takes about an hour if your Rib (rigid-hulled inflatable boat) is as fast as the one we used.

What to expect

Lots of water. It felt like water was in play for at least three-quarters of the round. There are just a few holes on the front nine where you move away from the large expanse of water which the course surrounds. Or does the water surround the course?

Bro Hof Slott

Either way, you need to pack plenty of balls. I lost seven.

From the black tees, reserved for competitions and professionals, the course measures at 8,056 yards. Not for me thanks.

We played off tees around 500 yards shorter which was still about 1,000 yards too many.

It has a real tour venue feel to it as even when you reach the greens they are extremely undulating and very difficult to land the ball on.

I’m not doing a very good job of selling it am I?

And that would be doing Bro Hof Slott an injustice as it’s an epic place to go and play golf which was in supreme condition.

Just don’t expect to score that well, especially if it is windy…

Favourite hole

Despite the difficulty at times there are some really fun holes here. I really enjoyed the par-5 15th which is like a white-knuckle roller-coaster.

You need a good drive (over water, obviously) before almost taking a 90˚ left turn towards the hole which completely surrounded by water.

It’s a fun hole because you really feel like you are on the perimeter of the course rather than stuck in the middle of it (I lost count of the times we came back past the halfway hut).

My best bit

Hitting what I though was a massive pull off the tee on the 8th only to realise I’d taken the tiger-line over the corner to leave myself in A1 position.

I did also enjoy hitting the island green on Sawgrass-style par-3 17th then watching three out of four tee shots from the group behind all go into the water.

Bro Hof Slott

Sportsmanship had well and truly gone out of the window by that point.

What to look out for at Bro Hof Slott

Just savour the occasion and take lots of pictures. As I said if you put pressure on yourself to score well you may end up disappointed.

This is a course designed to test the world’s best players so don’t feel down if you get beaten up a bit by it.

When I go back

I’ll try and lose fewer balls.

More information can be found on the Bro Hof Slott website here.
