Who is Jason Day?
Jason Day is one of Australia’s best in recent years, with a major championship and a stint at World No 1 under his belt.
After twice winning the Australian Junior Order of Merit, Day turned professional in 2006. His first few years were played on the Nationwide (now Korn Ferry) Tour, with his first win coming at the Legend Financial Group Classic in July 2007. Day then made history a couple of years later, becoming the youngest Australian to win a PGA Tour event. He was victorious at the HP Byron Nelson Championship in May 2010, and that would be the first of 13 wins on the PGA Tour to date.
The Australian became a major champion in 2015, when he won the PGA Championship. He became the first player in history to finish at 20-under-par in a major, with rounds of 68, 67, 66 and 67 at Whistling Straits. It was the third of five victories on the PGA Tour that year, with wins at the The Barclays and BMW Championship, two of the season’s FedEx Cup Playoffs events. He also has runner-up finishes in the other three majors. He has done so twice at the US Open – in 2011 and 2013 – the 2011 Masters Tournament and the Open Championship in 2023.
Day then won three times in the early part of 2016, as he rose to the summit of the Official World Golf Rankings. His victories at the Farmers Insurance Open, WGC-Dell Match Play and the Tour’s flagship event, the PLAYERS Championship, saw him become World No 1 for the first time. He has accumulated 51 weeks at the top of the OWGR during his career.
After suffering from chronic back pain and dropping down the rankings, Day returned to the winners’ circle 1834 days later. He won the AT&T Byron Nelson for a second time to claim his 13th PGA Tour title, and one of the more emotional wins of his career.
