Who is Scottie Scheffler?

Scottie Scheffler has become one of the best golfers in the world over the last couple of years, with a pair of wins at Augusta National among nine PGA Tour wins since the start of 2022.

Scheffler graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Finance, having helped the team win three consecutive Big 12 Championships. His first season as a professional saw him be named Korn Ferry Tour Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year as he made the move up to the PGA Tour.

He had to wait until 2022 before he secured a major win, but he went on to win four times in the next eight weeks. Victories at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and Arnold Palmer Invitational came close together for Scheffler, who then won the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. The incredible run culminated in him becoming a major champion. He won the Masters Tournament at Augusta National, becoming World No.1 in the process. 2023 was a quieter year, but he did claim the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass.

Scheffler would go even better through the spring of 2024, winning four times in five starts. He was victorious at the Arnold Palmer Invitational again, along with retaining his Players Championship crown. Scheffler then won the Masters Tournament for a second time, before winning the RBC Heritage in a Monday finish just eight days later.

He made his Ryder Cup debut in 2021, winning 2.5 points from his three matches, including a resounding 4&3 win over Jon Rahm on Singles Sunday. Scheffler made a second Ryder Cup appearance in Rome in 2023.

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
