Sahith Theegala is one of several young Americans breaking through on the PGA Tour, with a win to his name already.

Theegala was born in December 1997 in Houston, Texas into a family of Tegulun descent. He got into the game early on, despite his father never having played. Following his school years, he then went to college, studying at Pepperdine University, During his time there, which was truncated due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he was the recipient of the Haskins Award, Ben Hogan Award and the Jack Nicklaus Award. 

He turned professional following his graduation in 2020, Theegala turned professional, and after securing his PGA Tour card for the 2021-22 season, he went on to reach the Tour Championship in his rookie year on tour. His first professional victory came at the end of that year, at the QBE Shootout alongside Tom Hoge. Theegala’s first PGA Tour title came at the Fortinet Championship in September 2023, and he broke into the top 20 of the Official World Golf Rankings for the first time just a few months later.

Despite the 2020 collegiate season being cut short because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Theegala’s efforts saw him secure a rare triple. He was the recipient of the Haskins Award, Ben Hogan Award and the Jack Nicklaus Award.

Only Hunter Mahan, Bill Haas, Ryan Moore and Patrick Rodgers have achieved the same feat since the Hogan Award has been awarded using its current criteria (dating to 2002).

Dealing With Scoliosis

Theegala’s swing might look slightly different to most. That is because he has scoliosis, a sideways curvature of his spine. Despite that, and despite having to swing slightly differently, Theegala is a PGA Tour winner.
