Wow! Shane Lowry holes ‘surreal’ albatross at Farmers Insurance Open

Shane Lowry endured a poor start to the final round at Torrey Pines, but a moment of magic turned this around…

Shane Lowry hit his ball in the hole from 256 yards during the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open.

This is the magic tour professionals can conjure at any moment, and Lowry’s hole-out came in the shape of an albatross on the par-5 6th on the South Course at Torrey Pines.

The Irishman struck his five-wood from the fairway, landing it on the left fringe of the putting surface before it bounded in, sparking typically jubilant celebrations.

“I got off to such a bad start today, me and Patrick (Cantlay) and Aaron (Rai). We got off to an awful start,” he said, as reported by the Irish Independent.

“And then I said to them walking off the sixth tee it can only get better from here, Aaron.

“And then yeah, five wood, it was a perfect number, and I hit a nice shot. It looked good in the air but looked like it might be a yard short, and it just got up and then when you see it down (on the green), you can’t see where it’s going.

“You’re just waiting for the crowd’s reaction, and they put their hands up in the air. So it’s pretty cool. It was kind of a bit surreal.

“It’s hard to believe I was one-under for six holes, having started the way I did and playing the way I was, but it kind of got me going for the day and I played all right after it.

“I mean, this week was a nearly week for me. I feel like there’s a lot of good stuff coming. I’m pretty happy overall, but yeah, that was obviously the highlight of the week.”

It was the first albatross made on the South Course since Jason Gore on the 18th hole in the third round of the 2016 tournament.

There was also an albatross last week at The American Express. Jake Knapp made a two on the par-5 11th hole on the Nicklaus Tournament Course in round two.

Lowry’s stunner helped him to a final-round 70 and into a tie for 25th. Having missed the cut last week in LA Quinta, the 2019 Open Champion showed improvement in San Diego as we approach the Masters – an event where he’s appeared in the top 25 four years in a row.
