Louisville police release footage of Scottie Scheffler arrest

The Louisville Mayor and Police Chief provided updates to Scottie Scheffler’s arrest during last week’s PGA Championship…

The Louisville police have released footage of when Scottie Scheffler was arrested outside Valhalla Golf Club on May 17.

Footage from a fixed pole camera on Shelbyville Road, posted on the LMPD YouTube channel, shows a police officer following Scheffler’s car and stopping it by the entrance of the PGA Championship host venue. The World No.1 eventually gets out of the vehicle and is handcuffed.

More images from a separate video taken from a police car’s dash cam show Scheffler walking in handcuffs with officers at approximately 6.04 am. Scheffler was eventually charged with second-degree assault, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer after trying to enter the course ahead of the tournament’s second round.

The police report after the incident stated that Detective Bryan Gillis was dragged to the ground by Scheffler’s car and he “suffered pain, swelling and abrasions to his left wrist and knee.” Scheffler was detained and later released to play on Friday.

There was a heavy police presence by the golf course after John Mills, who was working at the event, was killed by a shuttle bus.

Scottie Scheffler footage taken from pole camera and dash cam

A video from the pole camera and one from the dash cam was posted to YouTube shortly after Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg and LMPD Police Chief Jackie Gwinn-Villaroel held a press conference when it was revealed Detective Gillis would receive corrective action for not activating his body-worn camera.

“Detective Gillis did have an encounter with Mr Scottie Scheffler. Detective Gillis should have turned on his body-worn camera but did not. His failure to do so is a violation of LMPD policy on uniforms and equipment subject category body-worn camera,” Gwinn-Villaroel said on Thursday.

The police chief reiterated that officers must have body-worn cameras in “a constant state of readiness” while Greenberg described the camera’s activation as “critically important.” Additional footage to the pole camera and dash cam won’t be released until the end of the legal process.

Scheffler, who went on to finish in a tie for eighth in Kentucky, had his arraignment delayed until June 3 when he was originally scheduled to be present to hear his charges on May 21.

His attorney Steve Romines told members of the press after the Mayor and Police Chief’s conference that Scheffler “didn’t do anything wrong” and they have “no interest in settling the case.”
