Scottie Scheffler’s arrest under investigation by Louisville police

Louisville’s chief of police said, “Any policy violations that are revealed through the course of the investigation will be appropriately addressed.”

Louisville police are investigating the procedure that led to Scottie Scheffler’s arrest during last week’s PGA Championship.

The World No.1 was detained on the morning of the second round after trying to enter Valhalla Golf Club through congested traffic with extraordinary footage emerging of Scheffler walking in handcuffs with police officers.

He was charged with second-degree assault, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer. The police report said that when Scheffler refused to listen to Detective Bryan Gillis’ instructions, Gillis was dragged to the ground when he accelerated his car.

“The internal investigation is still ongoing,” Louisville’s chief of police Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel said in a statement.

“Any policy violations that are revealed through the course of the investigation will be appropriately addressed according to protocol. The department intends to provide an additional update on the investigation on Thursday, 23 May.”

Since the incident on May 17, it has emerged Detective Gillis hadn’t activated his bodycam video before Scheffler was stopped. Louisville mayor Craig Greenberg said “action will be taken” if policies weren’t followed correctly in his weekly news session.

The heavy traffic outside of the major venue was the result of pedestrian John Mills being killed by a shuttle bus. In a statement on social media, Scheffler said he was proceeding “as directed by police officers” and there was a “big misunderstanding” in what became a “very chaotic situation.”

“I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today,” Scheffler added in his statement.

“Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective.”

Scheffler made his tee time in the second round in which he carded a 66. He went on to finish in a tie for eighth. His arraignment date, when he will have his charges read to him in person, has been rescheduled to June 3. The US Open at Pinehurst will start 10 days later.
