2024 saw the 50th anniversary of the Players Championship, but how many of those 50 winners of the tournament can you name on our quiz?
50 years on from the first edition of the event, the tournament has become one of the biggest in the world of golf, and it is dubbed as the “unofficial fifth major”.
The first 13 editions of the tournament were all won by Americans, with it taking until 1987 for a non-American to lift the trophy. Five years earlier, TPC Sawgrass had become the new home of the tournament, and it remains a key fixture on the PGA Tour calendar all these years on.
In more recent years, the winners’ board has a much more international feel to it. Golfers from 10 nations have been successful at The Players Championship since the turn of the millennium.
Scottie Scheffler won the 2024 edition of the Players Championship, shooting a stunning 64 in the final round to come from five shots behind. He also became the first player to successfully defend his Players Championship title from the year before.
The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass is immediately recognisable to golf fans and players. It always produces drama and the 2024 Players Championship was no exception. To force a playoff on the 72nd hole, Wyndham Clark’s birdie putt horseshoed around the cup, missing out on extra holes against Scheffler.
The win was one on a long list for Scheffler in 2024. He won nine times which included the Masters and the Olympic Gold Medal. The first-ever defence of a Players Championship title was just symptomatic of his season.
