The third round of the PGA Championship is always an exciting day in golf and any event. It’s moving day – the day before the final round.
In 2024, Xander Schauffele finally dispelled any myths that he couldn’t close big tournaments and became a major champion. He overcame Viktor Hovland and Bryson DeChambeau in a memorable edition of the tournament at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky.
It is the second major championship of the year. It is now played in May when it used to be in August and carry the name of ‘Glory’s Last Shot’. It also contains a very large field of stars from the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour, the LIV Golf League and also the very best PGA Professionals in the United States.
The third round of a major tournament is absolutely crucial. If you can’t follow up on your first two days of work, you are immediately on the back foot and have too much ground to make up. It isn’t impossible to come from behind to win this event, as we saw with Justin Thomas defying a seven-shot gap in the final round in 2022, but day three is crucial.
After 36 holes at Quail Hollow in 2025, Jhonattan Vegas was the surprise leader by two shots from Matthieu Pavon, Si Woo Kim and Matt Fitzpatrick. Bryson DeChambeau was five shots behind on 3-under at the halfway stage in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Due to dangerous weather still in the area on Saturday, the third round changed to threesomes off split tees from 11.43 am – 1.55 pm local time.
