Nick Dunlap is a future star of the PGA Tour, however, he is now known for his horrendous start to the 2025 Masters Tournament.

On his second start at Augusta National, he shot an astronomic 90 – 18-over-par with four double-bogeys and a triple-bogey. He remarkably didn’t three-putt, but he was last out of 95 competitors after Thursday at the Masters Tournament.

Dunlap was born and raised in Alabama, and went on to represent the University of Alabama during his college years. He won for the first time during his freshman season, and would go on to win several times. He won the US Junior Amateur Championship in 2021, and two years later, claimed the US Amateur Championship crown – becoming only the second man in history to do so.

The American played in the US Open in both 2022 and 2023 thanks to those Amateur Championship victories, but failed to make the cut on either occasion. He received a sponsor’s exemption to play in The American Express in January 2024, and made history. Dunlap became the first amateur to win on the PGA Tour in 33 years, and also tied the low round by an amateur on the tour during the course of his victory.

He became the first amateur to win on the PGA Tour since Phil Mickelson in 1991. He then became the first player to win on the PGA Tour as both an amateur and a professional in the same season, thanks to his win at the Barracuda Championship later that year.

Making Amateur History

With his victory at The American Express in January 2024, Nick Dunlap became the first amateur to win on the PGA Tour in over three decades. Phil Mickelson was the last man to do so when he won the Northern Telecom Open in 1991. It was also the first time he had made a cut at a professional event.

During the event, Dunlap also equalled the record for the lowest round on the PGA Tour by an amateur. He carded a 60 in the third round of the competition, tying Patrick Cantlay’s record.

US Junior & US Amateur Double

Dunlap is one of just two people to have won both the US Junior Amateur Championship and the US Amateur Championship. The other man to do so… Tiger Woods.

Sub-60 at 12

Incredibly, Dunlap carded a round of 59 at the age of 12. It came at the Highland Park Golf Course in Alabama during a junior tournament. Unsurprisingly, Dunlap won the event, by a whopping 13 strokes.
