Will Rory McIlroy lift his major curse in 2025?

We all want Rory McIlroy to complete the major grand slam at the Masters and win The Open at Portrush, but what will be the reality in 2025?

2025 could be a special year in the life of Rory McIlroy.

He will have yet another tilt at the major grand slam at the Masters and he gets another stab at winning The Open at Royal Portrush in front of a home Northern Irish crowd.

But for the last 10 years, McIlroy’s career at the Masters, the PGA Championship, the US Open and The Open (the majors) hasn’t been straightforward. He’s hit the bar but hasn’t found the back of the net.

Four major titles are nothing to be sniffed at and during that decade, the man from Holywood has maintained his spot as one of the world’s best players with countless wins on the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour.

But with every golf star, they are measured by the majors. Logic suggests a player of McIlroy’s calibre cannot finish his career without another, but his heartbreaking losses at The Open in 2022 and the US Open in 2024 have added scars that can’t be forgotten.

Without further delay, the NCG team tackled the key question as McIlroy enters another season: How many majors will he win in 2025?

I’m going to say none and then hope I am wrong. I will say that one isn’t going to come to Augusta National.

Steve Carroll

He keeps knocking on the door and if he’s ever going to end this drought next year’s major venues look perfect. We know he can scorch round Augusta, can he just get out of his own way?

He knows how to win at Quail Hollow (The PGA Championship) and he once shot 61 around Royal Portrush. As ever with McIlroy, it’s whether he can handle the pressure. If he won the Masters, a Rory slam wouldn’t be entirely out of the question. But if he doesn’t get on the board in 2025 – with so many battle scars now accumulated and with the venues so much in his favour – you’d have to question whether he will ever add to his tally.

I have said for a few years now that Rory won’t win another major. He’s the world’s most thrilling golfer, but I couldn’t trust him when in contention with six holes left. Other than Pinehurst in 2024 and St Andrews in 2022, maybe the 2018 Open if we’re generous, he hasn’t been close in 10 years.

Zero, and this is something I have said for a while now. He has come close too many times, and there is just too much scar tissue there.

Take the US Open for example. He had an incredible chance of winning the tournament and ending that major drought 10 years on, but missed two short putts in the final four holes to allow Bryson DeChambeau to win it for a second time. Those memories will always stay in his mind, and he will never win a major championship again.

Max McVittie

I like Rory’s chances around Quail Hollow. You could go as far as saying he owns Quail Hollow in recent years. A four-time winner of the Wells Fargo Championship around the North Carolina golf course making it the perfect place to end his major drought.

The four-time major champion bounced back from his US Open heartbreak to finish the 2024 season strongly after matching Seve Ballesteros’ order of merit record on the DP World Tour with his sixth Race to Dubai victory. I believe he will do something similar in 2025 and brush aside those major blues. He looks as though he has that bit between his teeth, a focused McIlory is a dangerous McIlroy.
