Luke Donald is in the conversation for the best players never to win a major, unfortunately.

This isn’t to say he hasn’t cemented a legacy in the game. The Englishman spent 56 weeks as World No.1 and, along with Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter, was his country’s leading major hope that never got over the line.

Donald won seven times on the DP World Tour and five times on the PGA Tour. He won the PGA Tour’s money list in 2011 and the Race to Dubai in the same year. He has top-three’d at the Masters and the PGA Championship but only managed to tie for fifth on two occasions at The Open in 2009 and 2012.

Arguably Donald’s greatest legacy is in the Ryder Cup. As a player and a captain, he has never lost as of 2023. He made his debut for Europe in 2004 and played four times without losing to Team USA.

After Henrik Stenson was removed as European captain for the 2023 Ryder Cup following his move to LIV Golf, Donald was chosen and led the continent to victory in Rome. He was selected to captain Europe at the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage as well.

In a subsequent documentary about the 2023 Ryder Cup called ‘Una Famiglia’, fans got to know Diane, Donald’s wife and her role in helping him prepare for the matches in Italy.

Let’s get to know Diane.

Luke Donald wife: Meet Diane Antonopoulos

Donald and Diane met at Northwestern University in Illinois where he started in 1997. He studied art and Diane studied psychology. Diane is Greek-born which explains her surname and the pair were married in Santorini in 2007.

The pair have three daughters: Sophia, Elle, and Georgina. They are active on social media and often post family pictures when they are on holiday or during seasonal breaks such as Halloween and Christmas.

It was in the ‘Una Famiglia’ documentary that was released in December 2024 that we got to know Diane a little more, and her role in making sure Team Europe’s preparation for the 2023 Ryder Cup went as smoothly as possible.

“I didn’t really ever think about how many months of work went into making that whole process so seamless,” Diane explained in the documentary. “It was so much work that I didn’t know and then, I made more work for myself because that’s just the way that I am.

“I came up with all kinds of new little things that I wanted to do too.”

“Anytime Luke isn’t saying much, Diane is saying something!” European player Shane Lowry added, laughing. Diane masterminded some initiatives linked to the Ryder Cup being hosted in Rome, including gift cards for the players which she spent a month producing.

Players such as Rory McIlroy spoke of Diane’s role in helping other players’ wives and she also contributed to organising the team uniforms and social events leading up to the Ryder Cup.
